Still want ‘Among Us’ for free? Try the game on the Nintendo Switch

For a year that has robbed us of so many things, 2020 has also given us a gift: the Among Us game. Technically, the game dates back to 2018, but the effects of lockdown & the pandemic combined to make it the perfect escapist dream for the year. A deception & social deduction game packed into one, Among Us is like the digital reincarnation of the classic Wink Murder we played as kids.

In the game where players are headed into space, they have to complete the tasks and/or figure out who among them is the impostor. Meanwhile, the impostor tries to kill all the crewmates & sabotages the systems to slow the players down and embrace victory. Perhaps the reason we loved this game so much was the team element in it.

Among Us 2?

Before Among Us became 2020’s breakout success, InnerSloth was working on the second edition of the game. When this one caught on, they decided to redirect all their resources into making the current version as fun, friendly, and safe as possible. The sequel’s resources & ideas will possibly be added as updates to the current version.

The developers wrote, “All of the content we had planned for Among Us 2 will instead go into Among Us 1. This is probably the more difficult choice because it means going deep into the core code of the game and reworking several parts of it. We have lots of things planned and we’re excited to bring new content to everyone as you continue to enjoy playing.”

Like all good things, Among Us also saw people using dirty tricks, fixing the games, hacking, or using the chats for purposes other than that of the game. Even so, it has emerged as one of the most popular games of the year and now we have the numbers to back that claim.

A very popular game

SuperData has reported recently on the game’s play data and revealed that Among Us may just be the “most popular game ever in terms of monthly players.” What are those numbers exactly? We’re talking around half a billion monthly active users in November.

No wonder the numbers are that high, considering that popular personalities & influencers are becoming Twitch streamers for the game. Some of these names include Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Sodapoppin, Pewdiepie, Shroud and Ninja. To provide better content, on Twitch itself, Among Us has 3.3 million followers.

Among Us, by the nature of the game, makes it fun to be a part of, streaming-wise. It has a social element of groupthink, as members try to collectively figure out who the impostor is. It also has another exciting element of subterfuge as the impostor(s) try to dupe others into believing they are innocent.

Among Us now on Nintendo Switch

In its latest indie-focused announcement, Nintendo made the biggest announcement of the year in gaming. Among Us is coming to Switch! This is a huge milestone moment, not just for the developers & companies involved, but also for the users & devout players.

Currently, Among Us is available to purchase through the Nintendo eShop. Reportedly, the Switch version of the game will support cross-play with other platforms – it’s this versatility across PC, iOS, and Android, that has enabled Among Us to rise to the levels of popularity that it has. Not much else has been said about the Nintendo Switch launch, but it’s bound to boost the game’s popularity further.

The ad-supported version can be downloaded for free on mobile phones, whereas the premium version will be available for 5 USD, nothing surprising considering the PC version costs the same. Other surprises launched on Switch this week included the action-puzzler Grindstone, the Indie World stream, and the community sim game Calico.
