UMass beat Northeastern 4-1 in the Hockey East quarterfinals and dispatched Providence 5-2 in the semifinals before edging UMass Lowell 1-0 in the championship game. 

The Minutemen rolled through the NCAA’s Bridgeport regional, routing Lake Superior State 5-1 and Bemidji State 4-0 to advance to the Frozen Four. 

How St. Cloud State made it to the national championship game

The Huskies were 13-15-6 last season before the season was called off and enter the championship game this year with a 20-10 mark.

St. Cloud State has a three-game win streak spanning the NCAA tournament. The Huskies upset Minnesota-Duluth in the semifinals of the National Collegiate Hockey Conference tournament before falling to North Dakota 5-3 in the tourney finals. 

Once into the NCAA tourney, St. Cloud State drubbed Boston University 6-2 in the opening round and followed up with a city sweet, upending Boston College 4-1 in the second round to punch their Frozen Four ticket.

On Thursday, the Huskies earned a hard-fought 5-4 victory over Minnesota State University – Mankato to earn to the team’s first national championship appearance.

UMass was without four players due to COVID-19 contact-tracing protocols, including leading goal scorer Carson Gicewicz and starting goaltender Filip Lindberg.

And it showed for much of the game as Minnesota Duluth outshot UMass 26-11 through two periods and 36-15 at the end of regulation. But the Minutemen took over in overtime with a 13-2 edge.

“We just ate some food in the locker room between periods, got our legs back and just focused on our game,” Wait said.

UMass forward Anthony Del Gaizo tied it at 2 with 11:35 remaining in the third period on a rebound that fell to the right of the net, and Wait got a stick on Bobby Trivigno’s wraparound pass at 14:30 in overtime to win it.

Backup goaltender Matt Murray, who started one less game than Lindberg this season, made 36 saves.

UMass took a 1-0 lead as defenseman Zac Jones scored a power-play goal on a wrist shot that went off the post late in the first period. Minnesota Duluth tied it 2 minutes, 17 seconds later on Tanner Laderoute’s third goal of the season.

Cole Koepke gave Minnesota Duluth a 2-1 lead in the middle of the second when he put home a rebound.

Freshman goaltender Zach Stejskal made 25 saves for Minnesota Duluth (16-11-2), which was looking to become the second three-peat champion in NCAA history.

UMass snapped Minnesota Duluth’s nine-game winning streak in overtime games at the NCAA Tournament.

As the excitement of St. Cloud State’s incredible 5-4 win over MSU-Mankato in the Frozen Four semifinals fades into Friday, it’s hard to imagine having to wait nearly 48 hours to see them in action again.

But in their 34th season, the Huskies will finally get to play for an elusive prize at PPG Paints Arena: a national championship.

St. Cloud State will face UMass on Saturday at 6:05 p.m. UMass pulled out a 3-2 overtime win to deny Minnesota-Duluth a third-straight national title.

Since posting the top-20 rankings in their locker room after being omitted before the season, the underdog mentality has been strong with the Huskies. Now they get a chance to play one more time for the biggest prize in college hockey.

Two of Minnesota three Frozen Four teams are gone, with St. Cloud State carrying the torch for the state of hockey. They’ll also have the hopes of the National Collegiate Hockey Conference on their backs. An NCHC team has been crowned NCAA champs the previous four tournaments.

The Huskies were only 5-15 all-time in the NCAA tournament entering the year, but they’ve already rattled off three wins and seek a final one in Pittsburgh.
