Prepare for spooky season with these upcoming horror movies

2020 was a year so spooky that we hardly even needed great horror films. As the vaccine is rolling out, many blockbuster horror films delayed by the COVID-19 pandemic should start to roll out as well.

2021 is set to keep the spooky season going for the rest of the year with some incredible upcoming horror movies. Ghosts, gore, & unknowable horrors await audiences who are brave enough to watch these chilling horror movies. There are a lot of exciting & gruesome horror films to scratch that itch for a scary movie in 2021 & beyond.

Candyman

With Nia DaCosta set to direct & pen the screenplay with Jordan Peele, Candyman has been one of the most highly anticipated upcoming horror movies since it was announced. That anticipation reached a fever pitch in early 2020 when a shocking trailer dropped that turned Destiny’s Child’s Say My Name into a creepy atonal anthem.

The film will serve as sort of a “spiritual sequel” to the original Candyman series which began in 1992. It will reintroduce the haunting ghost story to the new gentrifiers of Chicago’s Cabrini Green neighborhood. Yahya Adbul Mateen II, one of the stars of The Trial of the Chicago 7, is set to star as an artist who comes face to face with this horrific evil.

Originally set to release in 2020, Candyman’s release was pushed back multiple times due to the COVID-19 pandemic. As it is finally due to be released this summer Candyman is sure to be a box office smash.

The Green Knight

David Lowery’s The Green Knight also had it’s release impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic. Following a haunting trailer released in early 2020, The Green Knight became one of the most highly anticipated upcoming horror movies of the year.

Starring Dev Patel as Sir Gawain, King Arthur’s brash young nephew who looks to confront & defeat the gigantic tree-like Green Knight. David Lowery is known for his whimsical & surprising subversions of genre conventions as well as a unique visual style. The Green Knight is sure to be one of the most popular indie horror films when it finally arrives in theaters on July 30th.

Malignant

Few directors in the world of horror movies have a better track record than James Wan. Wan began his career by directing the first Saw film before moving on to direct the Insidious & The Conjuring films. Suffice to say Wan’s upcoming horror movie Malignant may be one of the most anticipated of 2021.

Very little is known about the plot of Wan’s forthcoming horror thriller. The only glimpse of Malignant that we’ve seen is a very short clip of actress Annabelle Wallis with her eyes open in bed, awash in red light with a creeping dark figure behind her. The film has already earned an R rating. It will be released in theaters & on HBO Max in September.

Halloween Kills

What would a list of the hottest upcoming horror movies be without the return of a horror legend. Halloween Kills marks the twelfth film in the franchise, though only the eleventh with The Shape Michael Myers.

A direct continuation to 2018’s Halloween, Kills will see director David Gordon Green and writer Danny McBride return to the franchise to finish what they started. A third film, entitled Halloween Ends, is already scheduled to follow in 2022.

Halloween Kills is said to be about Jamie Lee Curtis’s Laurie Strode and her family attempting to raise a mob to kill off the unstoppable Michael Myers for good. Director David Gordon Green has said the film will focus on the panic & paranoia that can grip a community dealing with mass fear. The film’s timely themes may resonate heavily with audiences as it arrives in theaters on October 15th.
