Top ten sizzling summer blockbusters worth visiting the theater for

This year has been an absolute belter so far for blockbuster jams. However, we can’t help but notice 2018 has been overrun by a deluge of superhero beats, with a majority of the ticket sales going to the likes of Black Panther, Avengers: Infinity War, and Deadpool 2. Not that we’re complaining – we love a bit of cape-wearing action. Siobhan Finneran (Boy A), Robert Emms (Anonymous), and Sacha Parkinson (Awaydays) star in director Dan Kokotajlo’s simple but sharp drama about a faithful Jehovah’s Witness who is forced to shun her own sister because of a religious transgression. As the separation takes effect on the family, she starts to question the meaning and the impact of God’s love.

Yes, it’s another superhero jam, and yes, it’s not exactly everyone’s favorite Marvel character. But for those who are members of the fandom, Peyton Reed’s action-adventure sounds like a helluva lotta fun. Plus it’s got Paul Rudd (The 40-Year-Old Virgin), who will always be a winner in our eyes.

Crazy Rich Asians

Based on the 2013 novel by Kevin Kwan, Crazy Rich Asians stars Constance Wu (Sound of My Voice) as Rachel Chu, who follows her boyfriend Nick Young (Henry Golding) to Singapore to meet the boyf’s family. Little does she know he’s quite literally the richest dude in the whole country, but now she’s got to overcome the culture clash ignited by a family matriarch that disapproves of her roots. All in all, Crazy Rich Asians is a juicy tipple for those looking to quench that romcom thirst.

With a helping hand from Martin Scorsese (Taxi Driver) as executive director, Jonas Carpignano’s A Ciambra is an impactful coming-of-age drama about a 14-year-old boy who is looking to grow up fast. Drinking, smoking, and following in the shadow of his brother, Pio (Pio Amato) is determined to show he’s ready to step into his sibling’s shoes. When his brother disappears, Pio sets about breaking away from the dominance of the reigning local hoods to start a criminal career of his own.

Tackling the ever-controversial concept of gay conversion camps, the Sundance indie hit from writer & director Desiree Akhavan (Appropriate Behavior) is adapted from Emily Danforth’s coming-of-age novel. The narrative centers around a girl (Chloë Grace Moretz) who is sent to a conversion center after being caught hooking up with the prom queen and goes on to develop mutual feelings for a girl she meets at Sunday school.

Hereditary

Are you looking for poop-your-pants movie material? Then head on down to the theaters when Ari Aster’s hyped horror hits next month. The film sees Toni Collette (Little Miss Sunshine) and her family suffer a fate worse than death as they try to escape the dark curse they’ve inherited.

The Meg

The bald-headed badass is back in director Jon Turteltaub’s action horror, about a slippery dude who is tasked with saving the crew of a sunken submersible after escaping an attack by a 70-foot shark. Well worth the ticket price for those who are willing to pay good money to see Jason Statham (Crank) battle a shark called the megalodon (honestly, who isn’t?).
