Screenwriters Prize of the Day: Tirota/Finish Line Social Impact Script Competition

We are totally digging the Tirota/Finish Line Social Impact Script Competition. Putting an emphasis on socially conscious work, the Tirota/Finish Line Social Impact Script Competition is looking to use artists’ voices to educate and create understanding through telling stories that are both entertaining and socially relevant.

Tirota and Finish Line both believe that it’s through putting a story around an issue that true change and impact can be made. It’s easy to have feelings around economics or climate change, but by adding a connection between the issue and the audience, a true conversion of hearts can occur.

A pairing to bring about social change

Tirota is a groundbreaking communication and engagement agency whose goal is to specifically enhance the societal impact as well as the commercial success of issue-focused entertainment. Tirota was formed by entertainment executives Ric Robertson and Jonathan Taylor. It is a subdivision of Tiller, LLC, a top advocacy and engagement agency.

Tirota has chosen to partner with the highly respected Finish Line, who is now in its 5th year as a top screenwriting competition run by former literary managers, who have helped lift writers’ careers by connecting them with producers, literary managers, agents, and filmmakers. The pairing has created the brand new Tirota/Finish Line Social Impact Script Competition.

The Tirota/Finish Line Social Impact Script Competition has a goal of identifying storytellers with a talent and passion for changing the world. Working with the scriptwriters to improve their scripts in a way that helps them to gain traction in telling their story. The ultimate goal is to get these impactful stories made into films where they can be used to impact positive change in the world.

Socially focused scripts

The Tirota/Finish Line Social Impact Script competition was launched with the belief that storytelling is the glue that binds humanity together. By focusing on content that can effectively help push forward socially conscious issues, an opportunity is given to that the world needs to better understand – and resolve.

Do you have a script that explores issues including, but not limited to:

  • racial, gender or economic inequality
  • climate change
  • criminal justice
  • refugees and immigration
  • drug addiction
  • physical and mental disability
  • the broken foster care system
  • gun violence?

The above list of topics is not all-encompassing.  If you have another subject in mind, submit your script, along with a brief explanation of the issue it addresses. The Tirota/Finish Line Social Impact Script Competition will consider all submissions. In particular, the competition will recognize stories that point toward opportunities for audiences to support and engage in meaningful, corrective action.

How to put your social impact script forward

The Tirota/Finish Line Social Advocacy Script Competition runs from Feb. 18-May 26. Please enter using FilmFreeway’s submittal platform, which also includes more details on how to submit your script.

This film competition will reward the winner by having their script optioned for $1000 by Tirota. Along with the 20+ years of management experience from Finish Line, Tirota will promote the script to a variety of targeted producers, agents, literary managers, executives, filmmakers, showrunners, and financiers.

Scriptwriters have the opportunity to enter their work into both The Finish Line Script Competition and the Tirota/Finish Line Script Competition. Scripts can be entered “as is” or you can request script development notes. As with the Finish Line Competition, you can rewrite and resubmit new drafts at no extra cost, a feature truly unique to the Finish Line’s Competitions.
