Louis CK’s bet pays off: I Love You, Daddy leaves TIFF with $5 million exclusive deal

The metamovie centers around a TV writer-producer trying to prevent his daughter from having an affair with a legendary lech (John Malkovich). Just as we predicted yesterday, CK is laughing all the way to the bank, with a reported cool $5 million from The Orchard for exclusive distribution rights. It’s unclear how much the self-financed black-and-white film actually cost. So far, I Love You, Daddy has been loved by critics but criticized in feminist circles, who find the subject matter a little too close to the repeated allegations of CK’s sexual impropriety dogging him over the years.

Kodachrome bought by Netflix for reported $4 million

This weirdo road trip flick was adapted from a New York Times article and stars Ed Harris, who is having another moment in his illustrious career after spending 2016 at the Westworld theme park playing the sensationally sadistic Man in Black. Jason Sudeikis (Downsizing) and one of the Olsen twins provide the other leads. Netflix went crazy for the beautifully shot coming-of-old/middle-age tale and have apparently shelled out a tidy $4 million for the rights. Critics so far like the piece, with all three notable cast members getting heavy props from TIFF screenings.

Jill replaces Jill on Amazon’s Transparent

Running shows is hard work, but somebody’s gotta do it – however, only if your name is Jill, over at Amazon’s Transparent. It was announced yesterday that Jill Gordon (Heartbeat, 90210, My So-Called Life) would be taking over from Jill Soloway for season 5 of the breakout hit. Known for its activist approach to LGBTQI issues, Transparent has flourished under the guiding hand of Jill Soloway, but the showrunner is just too busy with her other Amazon projects to baby this show any longer. We don’t know much about Jill Gordon outside her IMDb page, but we hope she can lead the exasperating Pfeffermanns to new and interesting places. Season four is set to air on Amazon later this month.
