FD News: The Harvey Weinstein Show
Sunday in Hollywood it was announced The Weinstein Company board voted to remove Harvey Weinstein from the company he founded. Weinstein’s brother, Bob, and COO David Glasser have been left holding the baby. The Company’s statement about the decision explains: “In light of new information about misconduct by Harvey Weinstein that has emerged in the past few days, the directors of The Weinstein Company — Robert Weinstein, Lance Maerov, Richard Koenigsberg and Tarak Ben Ammar — have determined, and have informed Harvey Weinstein, that his employment with The Weinstein Company is terminated, effective immediately.”
Subsequently, the floodgates opened. Weinstein’s behavior, for decades the worst kept secret in Hollywood, has been condemned by a plethora of A-listers. George Clooney criticized him, Meryl Streep vilified him, and just about everyone else – Jennifer Lawrence, Seth Meyers, Stephen Colbert, James Gunn, Jimmy Kimmel, Kate Winslet, Rose McGowan . . . the list goes on – had something to say about his decades of alleged sexual impropriety.
Also Sunday, Carol producer Elizabeth Karlsen went on the record that she had heard a first-hand account of his alleged misconduct from a victim as far back as the 1980s, going on to reveal “everyone” in Hollywood knew about Weinstein’s repeated abusive behavior. With that, Rose McGowan – reportedly the recipient of a $100k payout from Weinstein back in the 90s – called for the full Weinstein Co. board to step down. In 2016 she tweeted cryptically, “They shamed me while adulating my rapist.”
Every day more shocking statements continue to be made, more people go on the record with their stories, and more stars condemn Weinstein’s alleged actions. The world at large looks at Hollywood in wonder, asking why, after three decades of abuse, this powerful man wasn’t outed before. [Ed. note: just follow the bribes, uh, money.] In a town where money talks, Hollywood must face up to its “old boys’ club” issues – or stand to lose its shirt.
