Streaming of movies has made it very easy for movie buffs to see Oscar winners difficult to find on DVDs and impossible to find in movie theaters.

Where to stream all the best Oscar-winning movies

Some movies are timeless and can be watched again and again. If you don’t have any favorites of your own, then pick the Oscar winners for Best Picture and other categories. Some names that will always be a draw are:

  • Gone With The Wind (1939)
  • My Fair Lady (1964)
  • Forrest Gump (1994)

Streaming of movies has made it very easy for movie buffs to see these movies difficult to find on DVDs and impossible to find in movie theaters. Streaming technically refers to seeing a movie on your device without downloading it. Many Oscar-winning movies have transitioned to other forms of entertainment like free online slots. If you’re a slots enthusiast you can take that route as well.

Streaming of movies requires three components:

  • Media device like smartphone, laptop, or television
  • Access to the internet
  • Source of the movies

The best places to source movies for streaming are discussed in detail below. Many of these offer dedicated plugins to connect television sets through the internet in case you’re not viewing on a smart TV.

Netflix

The current king

One of the first choices for movie streaming is Netflix. Today Netflix delivers content produced in-house, but it still maintains an ever-expanding library of popular films and television serials. You will find movies of every genre from sci-fi to romantic comedies. The Netflix library also includes movies that have won Oscar awards and these are conveniently listed separately.

About Netflix

Netflix was founded in California in 1997 to engage in the business of DVD sales and rentals. The company entered the subscription-based streaming market in the USA in 2010 and went global with this product in 2012. As of April 2019, it has been reported that Netflix has over 148 million paid subscriptions worldwide.

Last night, the Oscars were fuller than usual of snubs. Here’s Film Daily’s 2019 edition of how The Oscars should have ended.

Oscar-winning movies

Netflix maintains different libraries for different countries, so you won’t find all the movies everywhere. The site lists award-winning movies as a separate genre, and Oscar-winning movies as a separate subsection. Check out some of the movies that you can stream:

  • Finding Nemo: This Disney movie won the Oscar for the 2003 Best Animated Feature. It was also the highest grossing animated film at that time.
  • Schindler’s List: The movie won seven Oscars, including those for Best Picture and Best Director. It has to be on every movie buff’s bucket list.
  • Jurassic Park: Its Oscars were for the sound and visual effects categories. It is exactly because of this that Jurassic Park makes for repeated viewing.

Amazon Prime

Going for the crown. Prime is making moves and has the cash to do it.

Amazon Prime (also known as Prime Video) is the subscribed streaming division of Amazon, one of the most popular global online markets. Like Netflix it shows both external content and in-house content. Members of Amazon Prime derive benefits at the online shopping portal as well.

About Amazon Prime

The company was launched as Amazon Unbox in 2006 in the United States. It entered the streaming market in 2011 after the acquisition of LoveFilm. Its services gradually expanded to other countries, before becoming fully global in 2016.

With people gathering to enjoy Oscar Night, we’ve been looking at ways to spice up proceedings. What could be better than Oscars bingo?

Oscar-winning movies

  • The Silence of the Lambs: One of the all-time greats as defined by winning the top four Oscars – Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actor, and Best Actress – in 1991
  • La La Land: With 14 nominations, the film tied with two others for the most nominated film. It went on to win 6 Oscars.
  • To Catch a Thief: For those who love to indulge in the past, this 1955 Hitchcock thriller starring Cary Grant and Grace Kelly won the Oscar for Best Cinematography.

YouTube

The oldest, but with a long way to catch up.

YouTube, now owned by Google, began as a video sharing portal. It is now in live streaming as well. The bulk of it is free to users, but this section is financed by ads that appear in the content. YouTube also has a premium subscription service, YouTube Red, that offers content without ads.

About YouTube

YouTube was launched in 2005 as a platform where users could upload, share, rate and comment on video content for free. The company was bought by Google in 2006. The movie streaming section was started in 2011.

Yes, the fashion first-timers might’ve made faux pas on the red carpet at awards shows, but does that even matter? And should we even care?

Oscar-winning movies

You have to choose between the free services with ads or the premium paid service.

  • The Sound of Music: This eternal movie won five Oscars, including for Best Picture and Best Director. Fast-forward to the songs if you don’t want to watch the full movie.
  • The Jungle Book: The 2016 version won the Oscar for Best Visual Effects and has high repeat value.
  • Avatar: This surreal 3D movie by James Cameron was nominated for 9 Oscars including Best Picture and Best Director. It ended winning Best Art Direction, Best Cinematography, and Best Visual Effects.

iTunes

iTunes is more popular in the field of music; it hasn’t yet achieved the reach of Netflix or Amazon Prime. iTunes works predominantly on a different model by which you can buy or rent movies for viewing on television or other devices. You can also subscribe to Apple TV channels to stream or download movies.

About iTunes

iTunes was launched in 2001 by Apple to manage media content on both Mac and Windows devices. It arose from the acquisition of SoundJamMP. In the release of iTunes 4.8 in 2005, video capabilities were introduced. In 2008, Apple and select film studios launched iTunes Digital Copy.

You can select Oscar-winning movies from this iTunes portal.

  • Bohemian Rhapsody: The biopic based on Freddie Mercury won four Oscars, including for Best Actor. The other three were technical awards related to sound.
  • The French Lieutenant’s Woman: Sometimes a classic has to settle for only Oscar nominations. This film, with Meryl Streep essaying the lead role, is one of them.

The options are growing

Sources for streaming movies are mushrooming. A few years from now, movie fans will have many more credible options for streaming. Popcornflix is functional in the USA and Canada and set to go global. Tubi is another option that promises growth.
