What's brewing in the Delta Quadrant? Dive into 'Star Trek: Prodigy' and see where it fits into the timeline of the franchise.

‘Star Trek: Prodigy’ releases first trailer: Does this show fit in the timeline?

Star Trek has started to branch out into animated series in its modern age. Star Trek: Lower Decks offers an animated adult take on the franchise, which has been well-received by fans & critics alike. Now, for the kids, there’s an animated Star Trek series heading over to Parmount+. Star Trek: Prodigy promises to be an interesting new addition to the timeline of the series.

What will Star Trek: Prodigy bring to the table? Where does the new series fit into the timeline of the franchise? Wasn’t this series supposed to be on Nickelodeon or did you just imagine it? Which past captain will be involved in the series? What sort of new area of Star Trek will be explored? Let’s dive into the upcoming series to see what more you need to know.

What is Star Trek: Prodigy about?

According to a description of the series, “Developed by Emmy® Award-winners Kevin and Dan Hageman (“Trollhunters” and “Ninjago”) the CG-animated series STAR TREK: PRODIGY is the first “Star Trek” series aimed at younger audiences and will follow a motley crew of young aliens who must figure out how to work together while navigating a greater galaxy, in search for a better future.”

The description continues: “These six young outcasts know nothing about the ship they have commandeered – a first in the history of the Star Trek Franchise – but over the course of their adventures together, they will each be introduced to Starfleet and the ideals it represents.” So it definitely sounds like a very new take on the franchise with the crew finding the experimental U.S.S. Protostar in the Delta quadrant.

Based on the trailer, which you can see above, it looks like these kids are definitely leaving some sort of horrible dystopia. So, you know, good for them. Get off of the strange crystal hellscape world. For fans of the franchise, you can recognize “Delta Quadrant” from Star Trek: Voyager, which followed a crew that was thrown into the vast depth of unexplored space.

Who is in the series?

For those of you hoping to pinpoint the timeline of the Star Trek series, Star Trek: Prodigy will, presumably, take place sometime after Star Trek: Voyager. Kate Mulgrew, who played Voyager’s Captain Janeway, will reprise her role as the good Captain in the series. She will play a training hologram version of Janeway that’s in the U.S.S. Protostar.

During Comic-Con@Home, Mulgrew said of the appeal for the series, “The beauty of it. The philosophy of it. The hope and the promise of it. And if there’s any age group that’s going to take this thing and embrace it with a whole-heartedness not seen before, it’s the young kids.” That’s almost lovely to really see. So Trekkie parents, definitely watch this series with your kids!

According to Gizmodo, the rest of the cast includes “Brett Gray, Ella Purnell, Rylee Alazraqui, Dee Bradley Baker, Angus Imrie, and Jason Mantzoukas as the alien teen protagonists: Dal (of an unknown species), Gwyn (a new-to-Trek Vau N’Kat), Rok-Tahk (a Brikar from the TNG novels), Murf (an unknown blob-like being), Zero (a non-binary Medusan), and Jankom Pog (a Tellarite).” The series is set for a Fall 2021 release date.
