Almost all of the best kids movies involve music for us to sing along with. From songs that teach lessons like “Circle of Life” to fun tunes that infest your psyche and have you singing them for weeks like “Let it Go,” there’s never a shortage of musical fun. Perhaps no other kids movie has accomplished this better than 2016’s Sing.
With the mass success of 2016 behind them, it was only a matter of time before Illumination & Dreamworks greenlit a sequel. With the return of Matthew McConaughey, Reese Witherspoon, Scarlett Johansson, and Taron Egerton, and the cast shooting for the big time, it’s almost guaranteed to be a treasure trove of musical wonders.

When we pick back up with the New Moon Theater gang, they have their eyes set on the glitz, glamour, and crowds of the Crystal Tower Theater in Redshore City. With no connections in the new city, Buster Moon sneaks into the offices of Crystal Entertainment to make a pitch with its ruthless owner, Jimmy Crystal (Bobby Cannavale).
He tries to convince him that he can get the reclusive former rock star Clay Calloway (Bono) out of self-imposed isolation. A journey in search of redemption for Buster & Clay follows. The latter of whom lost his confidence following the death of his wife a decade earlier.
If the returning members of the Sing cast weren’t enough, the upcoming sequel will also see the arrival of some of music’s biggest names from yesterday & today. The most notable of those additions is Bono, the lead singer of the iconic Irish rock outfit U2. He’ll take on the role of Clay Calloway, a lion rock legend at the center of the movie’s narrative. Also joining the cast are Pharrell Williams & Halsey.
Sing 2 release date
If you’re looking for a way to free yourself from the extended family this holiday season, Sing 2 will make for a perfect escape. Set to be released in theaters on December 22nd, 2021, the latest Illumination film will land just days before Christmas, shaping up to be a hectic final month of the 2021 calendar.
Before its current release date, Sing 2 was slated to open in theaters on December 25th, 2020, and July 2nd, 2021, but both dates were pushed back due to the ongoing pandemic. That means this film will have the pleasure of competing with the fourth installment of The Matrix franchise, The Matrix Resurrections, and the third film in the Kingsman franchise, The King’s Man.

Unfortunately, you won’t be able to watch Sing 2 online when it premieres. We have seen many movies come out with dual-releases over the last two years, but this isn’t one of them. With that being said, Netflix made a deal with Illumination & Dreamworks Animation to extend their partnership earlier this year to stream their films when they are made available to them. While not free, you can see it there if you’re subscribed.
Netflix has been the streaming home for Illumination Entertainment’s films, which Universal Pictures has distributed for years now. That deal will remain in place even longer as Netflix & Universal Films Entertainment Group have struck a new multi-year agreement to be the exclusive streaming home for all of Universal’s animated movies, including the library & future releases of DreamWorks Animation.
However, you can expect to see the movies to hit NBCUniversal’s online streaming service, Peacock, before hitting Netflix since that’s a part of the new deal. There’s no timeline for the release yet as the theater to small screen transition is becoming more & more complicated with the streaming services and the pandemic. In the meantime, make plans to watch Sing 2 in theaters when it comes out on December 22nd.
