From Olympics to kingpin: How Scott Miller turned to drug trafficking

You might recognize Scott Miller as the Australian Olympic swimmer from the 1996 Atlanta Olympics or from his great teamwork in other popular swimming events, but today Scott Miller’s name is in headlines for a large supply of drugs and a possible criminal syndicate.

Australian Olympian Scott Miller was caught red-handed today and is currently facing massive accusations of drug trafficking and more.

Who is Scott Miller?

Scott Miller is known worldwide as the Australian Olympian who won a silver medal for the 100-meter butterfly in the 1996 Atlanta Olympics. Miller is also most famously known for his work in the Australian 4 x 100-meter medley relay team and received a bronze medal.

Athlete Scott Miller is also recognized for his gold medal win in the 100-meter butterfly at the world championship at Rio de Janeiro, Brazil in 1995.

Arrest

According to CNN, Scott Miller was arrested for supplying approximately 2 million Australian dollars ($1.56 million) worth of methamphetamine that was molded into candles. Detective John Watson explained to Nine News: “For all intents and purposes, they looked like regular candles, but they weren’t laced with fragrance. . . they were laced with death and misery.”

The swimmer Scott Miller was arrested on Tuesday February 16th,  when the police raided his home in Sydney. A video of Scott Miller’s arrest has also been broadcasted which shows the athlete shirtless and sitting in his living room.

However, despite Scott Miller’s public arrest, the Olympian’s arrest is part of a bigger investigation. In fact, CNN added that New South authorities have been searching for the supply of illegal drugs across the Australian state.

Scott Miller wasn’t the only one to get arrested on Tuesday. In fact, another man in his forties was arrested in Balmain, New South Wales. BBC News reported the both men were immediately taken to the police station and no bail was made.

The New York Post noted that Scott Miller has been charged with “two counts of supplying a commercial quantity of a prohibited drug, dealing with the proceeds of crime and directing a criminal group.”

Syndicate

The Olympian’s arrest was reportedly part of a coup aimed to dismantle the criminal syndicate. Miller’s operation reportedly intended to only cause “death & misery” across North South Wales. News.Com.Au reported the syndicate’s supply of methamphetamine may only be the beginning of their criminal operation.

Detective John Watson told Nine News: “He (Scott Miller) is calling the shots, he is the head of the syndicate and others are working under his instructions.

According to SkyNews, the detectives are certain that Scott Miller was the leader of the syndicate and that these drugs were only part of the entire operation. John Watson stated: “This was not a small operation. . . They (the syndicate) were well organized and well financed.”

New York Post added that Scott Miller’s attorney Hugh Salter told the court that he wouldn’t be applying for any bail and that the case against the Olympian should be tabled for at least the next eight weeks.

Police statement

According to the New South Wales Police statement, the detectives from the State Crime Command’s Drug & Firearms Squad with help from the NSW Crime Commission were able to start their investigation into the drug operation.

A vehicle (Toyota Camry) allegedly used to transport the illegal drugs will be held by the police, as well as documents, mobile phones, documents and any other form of encrypted devices that could be used for the syndicate. These will get a further forensic examination and if needed will be presented in court.
