Lesbian sex scenes: All the most heartfelt moments of queer love

Sex scenes! They’re used for comedy, for ~art~, or for drama. They’ve got power within them to either make us cringe or feel that heavy petting through the screen. LGBTQ+ sex scenes are becoming more normalized rather than being something scandalous and shocking. And that’s a whole other article for another day, so let’s talk about great lesbian sex scenes.

Some of the best and most tender moments in film are within lesbian sex scenes along with some of the hottest and most intense. So if you need a reminder of how much you love women, then here are some of our favorite lesbian sex scenes ever.

Carol (2015)

Carol is one of those beautiful, delicate, heart-wrenching movies that leaves you both sobbing and full of longing. Cate Blanchett plays the title character with Rooney Mara as Therese, Carol’s lover. Carol is traumatized and going through a painful divorce. Therese is a free-spirited artist that works at a department store. Mara and Blanchett’s chemistry is absolutely electric.

The sex scene between the two is something special. They communicate with each other, check in on the others consent, and make sure that they both are enjoying the experience. Nothing is sexier than true intimacy and consent. Carol’s sex scene will leave you in tears.

Heavenly Creatures (1994)

Before you ask, this is the film based on the case where two girls killed the one’s mother in a case of obsession and fantasy gone too far. However, this film also has one of the most tender sex scenes that you’ll ever see. Maybe it just heightens the tragedy of Kate Winslet and Melanie Lynskey’s character choices all the more. Either way, it’s a tender and vulnerable moment.

Winslet has done quite a few sex scenes. The most famous being the hand on the glass in Titanic. Between the chemistry of her and Lynskey and Peter Jackson’s directing, this is just a standout scene in the film.

Blue Is The Warmest Color (2013)

Given how Puritanical some Americans are with regard to sex, it’s unsurprising that the film was a bit controversial upon its release. Blue is the Warmest Color is a very “French” film in that it shows the sex between Emma (Léa Seydoux) and Adèle (Adèle Exarchopoulos) in a very real and unflinching way. Also the sex scene lasts about 20 minutes so lesbian sex scene or not, it would have been controversial in the US.

Despite the controversy, Blue is the Warmest Color that depicts their lovemaking in a beautiful and real way. There’s a deep sense of intimacy in every moment of the scene. It’s sexy and real.

Atomic Blonde (2017)

Who says men in action movies should have all the great sex scenes? Atomic Blonde gives one to Charlize Theron in this 2017 powerhouse of a stylistic action movie. Is it needed for the plot? Probably not. Is it hot? Oh, definitely! But many agree that the scene is just hotness personified.

More importantly, the sex scene felt natural to what was going on screen. Yes, it probably could have been cut. But, it didn’t feel shoved into the film either. It was just a logical endpoint. A hot one.

But I’m a Cheerleader (1999)

Ah yes, the film that launched a whole generation of baby lesbians. Notoriously, there was a lot of cutting done to get the film down from an NC-17 rating. There is, however, a sex scene in the film, taking place between Megan (Natasha Lyonne) and Graham (Clea DuVall), which is perfectly scored and so amazingly tender. Add in a great song? And it’s pretty much the perfect scene.

Like, seriously, it’s a lesbian sex scene in a campy move but so tenderly emotional that you just can’t help but swoon.
