Kaitlyn Lorraine Boxall begins production on ‘Remember Us’

British film director Kaitlyn Lorraine Boxall continues to firmly cement her position as a director of merit after the release of her last independent film Behind Closed Doors last year. However, the director is not one to rest on her laurels as word is spreading about a new film currently in production called Remember Us, which was written by Alexander Butter.

Her newest contribution to the filmmaking landscape is rumored to be released later this year, following the success of her last hit Behind Closed Doors. While domestic abuse was the primary subject matter driving Behind Closed Doors to a climax worthy of a standing ovation, Remember Us will be focusing on more underrepresented topics such as dementia and racism.

As more and more facts surrounding the announcement of the film come into focus, let’s take a closer look at what we do know and hopefully draw some educated guesses as to what we can expect next.

Black hardships

As far as we know, Remember Us is currently being filmed in South East London and stars Feisal Bizimana, Rob Trend, Emma Hutchings and Frank Harper.

The film follows the story of a black boy named Lucas, who is sentenced to community service for attempting to shoplift alcohol. As part of his community service in the community payback scheme, Lucas is expected to deliver food parcels to the elderly within the local neighborhood under the supervision of his community service supervisor, Steve.

During his rounds, Lucas finds himself at the house of an elderly widowed man, Arthur Miller, who is at first racially abusive towards Lucas. Although, after getting off to a bad start, the two characters begin to slowly bond as Mr Miller realizes that Lucas needs some guidance in life.

However, Lucas finds himself being pulled between two different worlds; the world of crime where he must prove his loyalty to his friends or a world of promise, friendship and love. As Lucas allows his ego to get the better of him, feeling the need to impress his friends, his friendship with Mr Miller becomes challenged.

Overdue discussions

According to a release, the film tackles two topics of primary focus. Dementia and racism are to be highlighted between the relationships of the two main characters, Mr. Miller and Lucas. If the near-instant success of Behind Closed Doors is anything to go by, we are more than confident that the film’s approach to these subjects will achieve the same sense of modern reality of the current world – as Mr. Miller and Lucas both learn a great deal from each other despite being from different generations.

Along with talented screenwriter Alexander Butter, director Kaitlyn Lorraine Boxall is also partner with some skilled photographers on this project. Mark Willshire is managing the film’s posters, while behind the scenes photography is being managed by the duo Rod Ramsey and Lidia Huerta. A combination of great imagery, strong writing, and stunning performances will launch Remember Us towards success.

High anticipation

The racial justice protests of 2020 have proven to be a lasting catalyst for uplifting Black stories around the world with increasing nuance and intricacy. Seeing more stories navigating racism, mental health, and their inextricable relationships to crime in local communities is sure to move several conversations forward.

From what we can see so far, Remember Us seems primed to be one such story that will hopefully move conversations beyond social media and into dinner table discussions around the world.
