Dying to stream ‘Promising Young Woman’? Here’s where to watch
When Promising Young Woman’s trailer dropped last year in December 2019, audiences were chomping at the bit, dying to catch a glimpse of the new film. Since then, the film premiered at Sundance to captivated audiences in January 2020, and the film was set to release to the common folk in theaters in April 2020.
Well, you know what happened next: like so many other films, the release date was pushed back indefinitely thanks to the only subject of conversation these days, the COVID-19 pandemic.
The trailer for Promising Young Woman started to pop up on everyone’s algorithms in early December 2020, and audiences could only guess the movie would drop soon. Promising Young Woman was released in theaters on Christmas Day, but that wasn’t a great help to those in fear of COVID-19 exposure, even if their local theater happened to still be open.

Nevertheless, audiences are dying to see the new film that’s part black comedy, part edgy thriller. The cover of Britney’s “Toxic” in the film’s trailer was like a dog whistle to millennials everywhere, and we all became glued to our devices learning about the new movie.
Promising Young Woman comes from actress Emerald Fennell in her directorial debut. She’s best known for her role in BBC’s Killing Eve, and her filmography notes she’s appeared in film & TV since 2006. She enlisted an arsenal of millennial favorites to come together for her biggest project to date.
Promising Young Woman features a seemingly ageless Adam Brody, who will always be Seth Coen in the eyes of twenty & thirty-somethings who grew up on The O.C. He appears in the film’s trailer as the first victim in protagonist Cassie’s deception, only to be followed up by McLovin’, A.K.A. Christopher Mintz-Plasse.
YouTuber Bo Burnham will appear alongside Orange Is the New Black’s Laverne Cox and Community & Mad Men’s Alison Brie, as well as the original MILF Jennifer Coolidge. Millennials & Gen Z alike will appreciate the familiar faces of the ensemble, but these roles only decorate our big star: Carey Mulligan.
Welcome back Carey
Carey Mulligan stars as Cassie in Promising Young Woman, and we can’t help but feel like we haven’t seen her in a while. Carey Mulligan has seldom appeared in the spotlight since she broke out to super stardom in 2011’s now iconic Drive.
She kept a steady stay in the minds of cinephiles everywhere in the early 2010s, following up the Drive’s synthwave titan with Steve McQueen’s nauseating & polished Shame in 2011 and the Coen Brothers’ Golden Globe winner Inside Llewyn Davis in 2013. She’s done four movies since, and Promising Young Woman will be her first film since 2018.
All the buzz about Promising Young Woman has audiences dying to see the film. Well, some are trying to avoid dying by staying away from theaters and other crowded places. Where do they watch the new flick?
As recently as a few weeks ago, a search for Promising Young Woman on your Roku would lead you to a big fat blank screen. Fortunately, the film was released on VOD last week on January 15th, so there are plenty of places to stream the thrilling dark comedy.
