The following is a list of some of the most famous movies that were filmed in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania:

The Avengers

The Avengers is the 8th highest grossing film of all time, raking in over 1.5 billion dollars in revenue. For those unfamiliar, this movie consists of all of the superheroes in Marvel’s (now Disney) character universe. The Avengers features Hollywood superstars like Scarlett Johansson, Robert Downey Jr., and Chris Evans. The Dark Knight Rises

The Dark Knight Rises is the 7th movie in the history of one of the most recognizable superheroes in comic book history, Batman. She’s out of My League

She’s Out of My League was a romantic-comedy style movie that was released in March 2010. The film stars Jay Baruchel and Alice Eve, and follows the classic plot of the guy getting the girl that is way out of his league. The film grossed a total of almost $50 million, against its production budget of $20 million, The film features many iconic Pittsburgh attractions, and the skyline of the city can be seen throughout the entire movie. 


Concussion was a must see in its release year of 2015. The film stars Hollywood superstar Will Smith, and was made to shed light on the mental health issues that professional (American) football players suffer with as a result of the violent sport they play. Much of the movie concussion was filmed on the Pittsburgh Steelers home field, Heinz Field. 

The film, as well as actor Will Smith and actress Gugu-Mbatha Raw, were nominated for several awards coming from the MTV Movie Awards, Golden Globe Awards, and others. While the film only grossed around $50 million with a production budget of $35 million, the message that Concussion set to put out was well received. 

The Perks of Being a Wallflower

The Perks of Being a Wallflower is a drama that was released in 2012, starring Harry Potter’s Emma Watson. To add to the star power, the cast also includes Hollywood actor Paul Rudd, who plays a likable teacher. The film is about an outcast kid (played by Logan Lerman) struggling with a rocky past and current mental health issues, who is befriended by a brother (played by Ezra Miller) and a sister (played by Emma Watson). 

The film was considered a wide success, receiving many industry accolades and grossing around $20 million over its production budget of $13 million.
