‘The Office’ is leaving Netflix: Watch these shows to fill the void

With the streaming wars in full swing, The Office is the latest casualty. The massively popular mockumentary will be leaving Netflix to go to its new home on NBCUniversal’s Peacock. If this is tragic for you as you can no longer watch The Office for the eightieth time or just put episodes on in the background, there are still many great comedies to check out on Netflix.

While these shows may never be able to fill the hole The Office’s departure is creating, it’s still worth checking them out. Heck, maybe you’ll find your next favorite show. Here are the shows on Netflix you need to watch after Jim, Pam, Dwight, Michael, and the rest of the Dunder Mifflin crew move off Netflix.

Community

Community stars Joel McHale, Donald Glover, Chevy Chase, Alison Brie, and Gillian Jacobs. It’s a hilarious comedy about a study group formed at a small community college. The writing is phenomenal and each character has their own unique traits that make them all stand out. Community ran for six total seasons, so there are plenty of episodes to binge-watch.

Arrested Development

Arrested Development has five seasons, three of which premiered on television starting in 2003 & two more which debuted on Netflix later. This comedy has a much more twisted sense of humor. It centers around Michael Bluth (Jason Bateman), a member of a wealthy, spoiled family who has to run the family business after his father (Jeffrey Tambor) is arrested.

The family is kooky, crude, infuriating, and just crazy. The cast is excellent with a young Michael Cera, Will Arnett, Tony Hale, and David Cross as hilarious, but also insane supporting characters. Jessica Walter steals the show as the shallow, crude, and racist matriarch of the family. This is easily one of the most insane, but hilarious comedies on Netflix.

New Girl

Zooey Deschanel is known for being quirky and the quirkiness is turned to the max in New Girl. New Girl follows Jess (Deschanel) who moves into an apartment with three single guys. Each person in the apartment, including Jess, are going through their own issues involving relationships & their careers.

The dialogue itself will make you laugh out loud and Deschanel is immensely charming. Along with Deschanel are Jake Johnson, Max Greenfield, Hannah Simone, Lamorne Morris, and Damon Wayans, Jr. Each cast member is hilarious and brings something unique to the show. New Girl has seven seasons of quirky goodness

Schitt’s Creek

Schitt’s Creek recently ended, but swept the Emmys, winning Best Comedy and several performance awards. Schitt’s Creek features great writing, hysterical characters, wonderful performances, and intriguing narratives that provide great character development.

The story revolves around a wealthy couple (Eugene Levy & Catherine O’Hara) who find themselves completely broke. Their only asset is a small town called Schitt’s Creek, which they bought as a joke. The couple and their grown children (Daniel Levy & Annie Murphy) have to muddle through their newfound poverty as hilarity & hijinks ensue.

The Good Place

The Good Place is an NBC comedy from Michael Schur, a writer & producer for The Office. Eleanor Shellstrop (Kristen Bell) dies in a freak accident and winds up in “the good place”, essentially heaven. However, Eleanor realizes this is a mistake as she lived her life in a rather selfish and cruel way. Determined to stay, Eleanor tries to become a better person to avoid being sent to “the bad place”.

The Good Place is a remarkable comedy as, in addition to being funny, it explores many deep themes including morality and how we find purpose in life. It’s a fun, fantasy concept that certainly does everything it can with its ideas. Bell is supported by legendary sitcom actor Ted Danson, as well as Jameela Jamil, Manny Jacinto, D’Arcy Carden, and William Jackson Harper.

Dead To Me

Dead To Me is a wickedly dark Netflix comedy that blends drama & comedy perfectly. The series stars Christina Applegate & Linda Cardellini as a pair of friends who meet after Applegate’s character’s husband dies after being hit by a car. In the investigation, there are many surprising twists and turns in what actually happened in the accident.

The story progresses naturally and features great performances from Applegate & Cardellini who have great chemistry, despite being polar opposites of each other as characters. Season 2 premiered recently with a third season confirmed to be on the way.

These are the perfect comedies that will fill the void left by The Office’s upcoming departure. So start binge-watching and laughing whenever you have the time.
