Season 5 of 'Insecure' is finally here. Dive into the story and see why creator Issa Rae is bringing the hit series to its highly anticipated end.

Why is HBO ending ‘Insecure’ after season 5?

Well folks, all good things must come to an end. One of HBO’s greatest accomplishments, Insecure, starts its final run of episodes this week. The show has sparked a massive cult following, and for good reason: the series rules. Audiences have been waiting patiently for the final season of Insecure to come, and fans are shocked the day is finally here.

Fans of the series can’t get enough of Insecure, and some people aren’t taking the news of the final season too well. How will we go on in a world without Issa, Molly, and Lawrence? Well, we’re going to have to figure something out. The final season coming after just four seasons have people wondering one thing: why stop now? Here’s what we’ve found.

Integrity

In a world where nearly every series is dragged on long after quality plummets, and where every movie in theaters is a remake, reboot, sequel, or franchise, Issa Rae’s choice to end Insecure after season 5 is unusual. However, the move is a testament to Insecure creator & star Issa Rae’s integrity.

While many shows are written as they go, and have the potential to run around in circles for years & years, Insecure was always meant to end after season 5. Issa Rae recently spoke with DJ Envy, Angela Yee, and Charlemagne tha God on The Breakfast Club to shed some light on why season 5 will be Insecure’s last.

Don’t overstay your welcome

When Envy asks Rae why she is ending the show during the interview, Rae answers directly. She says since season 1 she knew she wanted to have only five seasons. She explained that she thinks that’s the right amount of time needed to tell a concise story.

“I like shows that I could watch with endings . . . don’t overstay your welcome”. That’s what Issa Rae told interviewers, and you have to respect the artist’s POV here. While so many in Hollywood would take more money to keep pumping out drivel to the mouths of rabid fans willing to watch anything, Issa Rae knows her story must be told correctly. And we love her for it.

Furthermore, Issa Rae had her team in mind in deciding to end Insecure after season 5. She went on to tell interviewers that asking the large crew of the show both in front & behind the camera to give years & years of their lives to an ongoing show “felt like a lot”.

Interviewers joked that they don’t think the crew would mind, considering the series’s massive success, but it looks like that question won’t be answered any time soon. Of course, the next question for Issa was whether or not she would ever do an Insecure movie.

What do you need a movie for?

In another slam dunk of integrity, Issa Rae told interviewers she wouldn’t do an Insecure movie.

She said she doesn’t want to do a movie, asking the Breakfast Club crew, “what do you need a movie for?” Exactly, Issa. Even though it seems everyone around her is asking Issa Rae to keep Insecure going until the series gets bad, she is fighting to protect her show.

Well, it seems we know why Issa Rae is really ending Insecure after season 5: she cares about her show. Now, there’s nothing left to do but rewatch the series and wonder what will go down in the end. Will Issa & Lawrence stay together? Will Molly ever figure her sh*t out? Are we going to see Dro again? Is Condola really going to keep this baby?! We’ll have to tune in, week after painstaking week, to find out.
