‘Guardians of the Galaxy 3’ to End ‘Super Mario’s’ Four-Week Box Office Reign With $120 Million Debut: “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3,” the conclusion to Marvel’s trilogy about an intergalactic crew of misfits, looks to kick off summer moviegoing season with a bang. The superhero adventure is hoping to bring in $120 million in its opening weekend, falling in between the starts of 2014’s “Guardians of the Galaxy” ($94 million) and 2017’s sequel ($146 million). There’s a chance that “Vol. 3” could fall short of those projections and land closer to a less-spectacular $110 million to $118 million, according to independent tracking services.

Of course, it’s hard to chide a film that hits $100 million in its domestic debut. But the idea, especially for tentpoles that cost $200 million-plus, is to grow, not shrink, the fanbase with new installments. Reviews for “Guardians 3” are decent (it holds a 78% on Rotten Tomatoes) but sources say tracking has been stagnant in the lead-up to its theatrical premiere. That points to either mounting indifference to the newest phase in the Marvel Cinematic Universe or a sign that Disney waited too long to conclude the “Guardians” story, which began nearly a decade ago and turned Chris Pratt and Dave Bautista into bona fide movie stars and writer-director James Gunn into an A-list filmmaker. At the same time, there’s not really a gauge for a franchise that’s 32 films deep.
That also adds some intriguing wrinkles to the film’s post-credits Easter eggs. Considering its — and Gunn’s — status, it would be entirely understandable to simply do without them and let the story stand on its own. The director has confirmed otherwise, however: two post-credits sequences are slated for Vol. 3. That doesn’t quite match the absurd number (five) from Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, but considering that this is the team’s farewell, they’re apt to contain a lot more meaning. Here’s what fans know about Vol. 3‘s post-credits scenes.

Rocket and Nebula, the only remaining Guardians of the Galaxy, take part in the plan to retrieve the Infinity Stones from another universe to save those who were killed by Thanos’ snap. In doing so, they accidentally bring that universe’s Gamora and Nebula to their own universe, though they also revive Star-Lord, Drax, Mantis, and Groot, bringing the team back to nearly full strength. Nebula officially joins the team, marking a major development in her character arc.
Since Gamora was killed before Thanos snapped, she isn’t brought back, though the other universe’s Gamora is now roaming the main universe. Given this version of Gamora was never part of the team, she’s understandably confused by them and their affection for her. This other Gamora seems to be playing a large role in Vol. 3.
The movie ends with the Guardians returning to space to adventure and search for this new Gamora — now with Thor on the team, as the god of thunder seeks to find himself.

Nonetheless, this edition largely succeeds like the other ones, thanks to the chemistry of the main ensemble, who have grown into their characters with relaxed ease. The interplay among them is frequently delightful, especially between the mind-controlling Mantis (Pom Klementieff) and the big doofus Drax (Dave Bautista), who come across like alien versions of Laurel and Hardy. Karen Gillan’s Nebula is more acerbic than ever, and Vin Diesel’s Groot has grown up to be a much bigger tree, although his vocabulary hasn’t improved very much. And Kraglin, played by Sean Gunn (the director’s brother), well, he’s still there.
Among the many antagonists on hand is Adam Warlock, the artificial being created to destroy the Guardians, who clearly has mommy issues with the villainess Ayesha (Elizabeth Debicki, who looks even more striking in gold face paint). Will Poulter plays the role with an enjoyable mixture of physical menace and baby-like befuddlement, but he ultimately fails to make a lasting impression.
This installment really ups the ante in terms of practical and make-up effects, as well as in world-building, including the Counter-Earth, which resembles a ‘50s-era suburb populated by bizarre humanoid creatures of which Rod Serling would have approved. When Quill and his fellow Guardians land there, it results in some of the more surreal moments in any Marvel film as well as some hilarious throwaway gags — including one in which Nebula’s inability to open a car door prompts Quill to utter the first “Fuck” heard in the MCU. (But only one, since that precious PG-13 rating mustn’t be endangered).

When Is The Earliest GOTG 3 Could Come To Disney+?

Based on the fact that the earliest an MCU movie has gone from theaters to Disney+ is 47 days, James Gunn’s Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 is nearly out, and the sequel promises to be the end of this iteration of the team that fans have followed for nearly a decade. If you’ve fallen behind or want to see what the team is all about, here’s a refresher course on which Marvel films and productions you should watch before seeing Vol. 3.
Here are all the things that you should watch ahead of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 in the order they’re best experienced in.
Is Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 3 streaming?
The film’s wildly imaginative visuals are another plus, with the proceedings feeling so bizarrely trippy at times it’s as if Gunn is aiming to create a midnight cult classic rather than a blockbuster superhero film. His distinctively anarchic style is on full display here, which makes you wonder how he’s going to tone it down when he tackles such iconic characters less suitable for irreverent humor as Superman.
The action sequences are also stunners, especially an epic climactic battle accompanied by the propulsive Beastie Boys classic “No Sleep Till Brooklyn,” a typical example of the filmmaker’s uncanny knack for providing fantastic playlists. This one is no exception, straying from the first two installments’ nostalgic ‘70s-era soundtracks to encompass several decades worth of terrific cuts and featuring artists including Alice Cooper, Spacehog, The Flaming Lips, The The and The Replacements. It’s no wonder the Guardians love to dance.
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 Streaming Release Status:
There’s been no official announcement regarding Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3’s streaming release date, though we know it will eventually be released on Disney+, rather than Netflix or HBO Max.
As for a potential release date, let’s look to the past three MCU films for guidance. Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania will come to Disney’s streaming service on May 17, 89 days after its theatrical debut; Black Panther: Wakanda Forever hit the service after 82 days; and Thor: Love & Thunder before it took 63 days to hit Disney+. Should Disney adhere to that 63–89-day window, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 would come to streaming between July 7 and August 2.
What Is Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 Movie About?
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 continues the story of the MCU’s band of misfit heroes. Here’s the official overview from Marvel:
Peter Quill, still reeling from the loss of Gamora, must rally his team around him to defend the universe along with protecting one of their own. A mission that, if not completed successfully, could quite possibly lead to the end of the Guardians as we know them. The first Guardians of the Galaxy movie brings the ragtag group of unlikely heroes to the MCU, introducing viewers to Peter Quill/Star-Lord, Gamora, Drax the Destroyer, Rocket, and Groot. Future team members Yondu, Kraglin, and Nebula appear in more antagonistic roles that are important to their future portrayals, while the MCU’s first major overarching antagonist, Thanos, gets a bit of spotlight. This is where the Guardians of the Galaxy get their start and is essential viewing for Vol. 3.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 is James Gunn’s farewell to the MCU (at least for now), as the writer-director moves on to lead rival DC Studios. It’s also the conclusion to his beloved trilogy of spacefaring, superhero misfits, and according to our Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 review, it successfully “sends [the Guardians (and Gunn)] out on an emotional and action-packed high note.”
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 hits theaters on May 5. If you’re wondering how and where you can watch it yourself, take a look at the information below.

This dour, visually off-putting two-and-a-half-hour A.S.P.C.A. nightmare of a film may only be for completionist fans. Rocket, voiced by Bradley Cooper, in “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3.”Credit…Marvel Studios/Disney
Animal lovers, comic book fans and unofficial adjudicators of narrative continuity, action and style in the Marvel Cinematic Universe: Lend me your ears. “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3” is not the movie for you.
Perhaps this dour, visually off-putting two-and-a-half-hour A.S.P.C.A. nightmare of a film is only for completionist fans like myself, arriving at the theater armed with overpriced popcorn and the hope that the director James Gunn’s latest could replicate the romp and anti-gravity gambol of the first.
For those who need help getting their multiversal timeline untangled, “Guardians” is the second film of the so far ecstatically bad Phase Five of the M.C.U., after the, to quote my colleague, “thoroughly uninspired” “Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania.” We last caught our whole team of lovable riffraff together in “Avengers: Infinity War,” when Thanos (Josh Brolin) threw his adopted daughter and galaxy guardian, Gamora (Zoe Saldaña), into an abyss to get one of the Infinity Stones, which he used to snap away half of the universe. (There were some dancing Groots and a cute holiday special about abducting Kevin Bacon, but — sorry, Kev — they were irrelevant.)
