The 2023 Epsom Derby takes place today with an earlier-than-normal start for the biggest race of the British Flat season.

A rather hectic set of headlines leading up to The Derby Festival has seen train strikes, the FA Cup final and even the threat of a mid-race protest cloud the preparations for one of horse racing’s great spectacles.

Aidan O’Brien’s Auguste Rodin is the favourite to take the crown.

There will be live radio coverage of the Derby on BBC Radio 5 Live.

What are racing’s Classics?
One of the highlights of the Flat racing calendar, the Derby Festival features two of the five British Classic races – the Derby and the Oaks, which Frankie Dettori won for the seventh time on Soul Sister on the opening day.

The first two Classics of the season, the 2,000 and 1,000 Guineas at Newmarket, took place in May, while the St Leger Stakes at Doncaster will be run in September.

White Birch finished third, while Frankie Dettori, who who was riding his last Epsom Derby, had gone into the race as favourite on Arrest but finished a disappointing 10th.

The race had been under threat from Animal Rights activists but Surrey Police confirmed on Saturday morning 19 arrests had been made of people suspected of planning disorder. Two protesters were arrested at the racecourse as they attempted to disrupt the Epsom Derby.

One man managed to jump the fence before being tackled and handcuffed by police on the racecourse while the crowd jeered and booed.

Minutes later, a woman attempted to climb the fence but was pulled to the floor by police.

Despite pledges by activist group Animal Rising to “cancel or severely delay” the Derby, the race continued as planned shortly after the protesters were carried away.

With 149 races under its garland of roses, it’s hard to imagine a horse race with more history than the one ran at Churchill Downs the first Saturday of every May.

However, the Kentucky Derby isn’t exactly the trailblazer in that regard. On Wednesday, the Kentucky Derby Museum headed back to where it all started.

In the late 1800′s, Meriwether Lewis Clark opened The Louisville Jockey Club, later Churchill downs.

That only happened after Clark traveled Europe looking for a racetrack after which to model his own. In England, he found the Epsom Derby, where they’d been running nearly 100 years already.
