Spidey’s summer vacay: Everything we know about ‘Spider-Man: Far From Home’

If you’ve just about recovered from the general high emotions, upset, and overall dusty atmosphere of Avengers: Infinity War, you’re likely all too enthusiastic for anything that may give you some joy concerning young Peter Parker (Tom Holland) and his web-slinging ways. With another Avengers movie scheduled for next year and Spidey due to return not long after, you’re probably already getting stupidly hyped for the next instalments of the extensive Marvel story. So honey, stay hyped – here’s everything we know about the next movie from the web-slinging canon, Spider-Man: Far From Home.

Your faves are returning to the cast & crew

Naturally, Holland will be returning as everyone’s favorite friendly neighborhood web-slinger and he’ll be joined by fellow cast members Zendaya as Michelle Jones, Marisa Tomei as May Parker, and even Michael Keaton reprising his role as Vulture. It’s also worth adding that Spider-Man: Homecoming screenwriters Chris McKenna and Erik Sommers are penning the Far From Home script and that Homecoming director Jon Watts will also be directing Far From Home, which indicates the film will maintain that similar fun vibe.

“Bring the ruckus to that ass, Larry!”: J.B. Smoove has been added to the cast

The Curb Your Enthusiasm actor has been added to the cast in an as yet unknown role. Mysteriously, Deadline reported that Sony “would not comment and nobody would divulge Smoove’s role,” with the publication speculating that the comedic actor is to be a lead in the ensemble.

Jake Gyllenhaal is rumored to be cast as supervillain Mysterio

Though the actor has yet to be publicly confirmed for the role, Gyllenhaal’s name is all over just about everything you could possibly read about the film, which suggests it’s almost a sure thing he’ll appear in the movie as the strange supervillain. Mysterio is a former special effects artist with a knack for utterly convincing and powerful illusions that blur the line between reality and fantasy. In the comics, the villain has an augmented suit featuring various gadgets and weaponry – some of which have been known to cancel out Spider-Man’s Spider-Sense and feature chemicals that can dissolve Spidey’s webbing.

As Den of Geek speculated about the inclusion of the villain, Far from Home “could open up a whole new visual sandbox by allowing Mysterio to wreak havoc in an artificial realm of his own creation,” which could lead to some incredibly emotional scenes. “Mysterio’s illusions can . . . be used to throw Peter Parker’s worst fears and biggest regrets back in his face . . . The thought of his loved ones . . . being endangered and/or killed is exactly the kind of thing that would keep Peter up at night, and Mysterio can create an illusion to show him exactly that.”

The film will be about Peter taking a global trip during a summer vacation

Speaking to io9, Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige confirmed that Spidey “will spend some time in New York, but he’ll spend some time in other parts of the globe” too. Interestingly, Feige also suggested the upcoming fourth Avengers movie that will precede Far From Home could have something to down with why Peter is suddenly globe trotting. “The way Civil War and the fact that he went to Leipzig Airport and then has to go back to school, informed Homecoming, the two Avengers films that precede [the sequel] will greatly inform, probably even more so, the next movie.”

Far From Home will be the official start of MCU’s phase four

In another interview with io9, Feige also suggested that Peter is the best “person to hold your hand and lead you into the next incarnation of the MCU, in a grounded, realistic manner,” and that Far From Home will be the film to do exactly that. The currently untitled fourth Avengers movie is scheduled for release on May 3 2019, while Far From Home will be released two months later on July 5 2019, with Feige stating: “It was purposefully done like this. Like how the events of Captain America: Civil War impacted Peter as he was dropped off by Tony and expected to go back to continue his sophomore year, how the hell are the events of Infinity War and Untitled [Avengers] going to affect him as he, yes, goes back to his junior year?”

Feige has been vague about how the film will work after Infinity War

Even Holland jokingly stated: “I’m a little confused [about Spider-Man 2] because I died” when revealing the name of the new Spider-Man movie, and we’re incredibly curious to see how the movie deals with such a major plot point. Considering everything Feige has suggested about the movie and how it works within the Marvel canon, it seems safe to assume that the fourth Avengers movie will see Peter resurrected in some way. Considering Deadpool 2 brought elements of time travel into the MCU, we wouldn’t be surprised to see time played about with in order to bring back all those dusted heroes crumbled to the wind in Infinity War.

Naturally, Feige has remained his usual evasive self when talking about the issue, even suggesting to Gizmodo the film could take place before Infinity War. “When does that movie take place? We know it’s the summer. I think it’s summer vacation. I think he’s going to Europe with his friends. I don’t know what summer . . . I mean, I do know [but you don’t].” Helpful as ever, sir!

Shooting has started in London

It’s still early days, as the film only started shooting at the beginning of July, but some on-set photos and videos have already started to surface on social media. Just don’t get too excited about them – they mostly show the cast and crew in rehearsals and Holland grabbing some much needed coffee between shots. But still – it’s happening.
