‘The End of the F***ing World’ season two is already in production
It’s official. The second season of the Netflix series The End of the F***ing World is on its way. The Twitter account See What’s Next, an official news profile about the most popular movie and series streaming company, shared a picture of the script for the first episode of the new season, directed by Charlie Covell.
Originally launched by British TV broadcaster Channel 4, the series had more impact when they were released on Netflix in January 2018. Consisting of only eight episodes, the darkly humorous tone of the show attracted an unexpectedly faithful fanbase, and requests to renew the series for a second season started dropping in. At the end of August the good news arrived.
Beth Willis, head of Channel 4, admitted “Charlie’s witty, wonderful world is back, and we can’t wait to see where she takes it next. We’re so proud that this global success story began at Channel 4 and that a second series is on its way.”
The End of the F***ing World was adapted by Charlie Covell, who got the inspiration from a comic book series with the same name written by American author Charles Forsman. It follows the unusual lives of the two main characters: 17-year-old James (Alex Lawther) and Alyssa (Jessica Barden).
During the first season, James reveals he is a psychopath; he tortures animals and doesn’t feel remorse. Now he wants to know how it feels to kill a real person for the first time and chooses the perfect victim: Alyssa. However, in an unexpected turn of events, his perfect plans swivel directions, and after a series of misunderstandings, the young couple hits the road alone, aiming to look for Alyssa’s father.
The real problem? Surprise, surprise: James falls in love with his victim and discovers he isn’t as merciless as he thought he was. Don’t worry, we won’t spoil things further. If you appreciate black humor and complex characters with questionable morals – a bit like the recent success Russian Doll – this one deserves your attention.
Spoilers ahead: Read at your own risk!
If you haven’t seen The End of the F***ing World yet, stop reading right now. If you don’t plan to watch it or are just very curious, move along, as we remember what happened during the first season.
After hitting the road, due to a slight altercation with their parents, Alyssa & James stop to take a rest at a presumably abandoned house. However, the owner not only comes back and catches the invaders, but turns out to be a serial killer himself.
So, psycho James wears a hero’s cape, jumping in to protect Alyssa and kill her attacker. In the end, his first kill wasn’t exactly who he thought it would be.
With blood on their hands, James and Alyssa run away and try to reach her father – and they eventually do. Shady, selfish drug dealer Leslie (Barry Ward) lives in a trailer, and instead of helping his daughter, ends up ratting on them to the cops, and the detectives catch up to them.
In another heroic act, James confesses everything, claiming Alyssa is innocent. Alyssa doesn’t seem to want to be apart, because she knocks out a police detective! Then James decides to knock Alyssa out to prevent her from running away, and escapes through the beach. We hear gunshots as the screen fades to black on a cliffhanger.
What’s new for season 2?
What a rollercoaster! After leaving us with so many unanswered questions, the renewal was welcome – we’re stoked Channel 4 & Netflix decided to place their bets on another season. The comeback of The End of the F***ing World might still happen in the end of the current year on Channel 4, so by 2020 the episodes should be available worldwide for everyone with a Netflix subscription.
In the new season, we can obviously expect the return of Lawther & Barden, reprising the main characters. Also, we might continue to follow the subplot involving detective Teri Donoghue (Wunmi Mosaku) and her detective partner Eunice Noon (Gemma Whelan –you might know her better as Yara Greyjoy from a little series called Game of Thrones).
Furthermore, other recurring characters from season one such as James’s father Phil (Steve Oram), Alyssa’s mother Gwen (Christine Bottomley), and her abusive stepfather Tony (Navin Chowdry) will probably reappear too. As you can imagine, there will likely be a ton of new characters & adventures – the world will continue to f***ing end!
