Paging Dr. Howser: Inside the ‘Doogie Howser’ Disney+ reboot
The doctor is in, over at Disney+. Disney announced they are rebooting the early 90s television show Doogie Howser, M.D., for the streaming service. The show entitled Doogie Kameāloha, M.D., went into development at Disney earlier this year and is looking to enter production soon to make its 2021 premiere.
Neil Patrick Harris’s breakout TV role will do a slightly different take with a female lead and taking place in Hawaii. The location choice is not just a random pull for diversity. The show’s writer & producer, Kourtney Kang, is from Hawaii. Her main character, Lahela “Doogie” Kameāloha, will share in Kang’s biracial background.
Kang shares her producing job with connections to the original show. While Steven Bocho died in 2018, his wife, Dyana Bocho, and son, Jesse Bocho are stepping in as executive producers. It’s always nice to have parts of the original team on a reboot, while Steven can’t, it’s a loving tribute for the creator’s family to be involved.
Kang on the other hand brings an extensive background, writing & producing on Fresh Off the Boat & How I Met Your Mother. She’s also bringing Jake Kasden & Melvin Mar from the Fresh off the Boat team.
There have been no casting decisions as of yet, but the hope is to film in Hawaii. Disney is eyeing a 2021 release on Disney+ but it all depends if filming restrictions are lifted and the show can finish production on time.
Disney is all in on the new take on Doogie Howser. President of 20th Television, Carolyn Cassidy explained “Kourtney’s vision for the character is so inspired, we’ve been dying to collaborate with Melvin and Jake again, and Disney+ is exactly the right home for this idea. We couldn’t be more excited.”
Harris is not attached to the project at this time so the hopes of two Doogies in one show seem squashed for now. Lahela “Doogie” Kameāloha will go through many of the same challenges Harris’s character did. She is a mixed-race sixteen year old girl trying to balance her life as a teenager and a medical career. The daughter of an Irish mother & a Hawaiian father, will also have to deal with the challenge of her mother as her boss.
This is not the first rebooted project for Disney+ based on an old intellectual property. Disney mined the vault so to speak to create a Mighty Ducks sequel, a Turner and Hooch series, and a sequel series to the popular Disney Channel show Lizzie McGuire.
