An interview with fashion designers Demo and Tono from DEMOBAZA Atelier

Minimal. Futuristic. Avant-Garde. Three words that best describe fashion brand DEMOBAZA. In this ever-changing world of fashion, nothing is more prominent today than fashion trends that are ethically-oriented and remind us of the beauty of nature and the natural world, and that is exactly what Bulgarian-born fashion designers Demo and Tono want to create.

They have a distinctive story and style that permeates throughout their amazing creations. From Kanye West, Justin Bieber and Grimes, to Janet Jackson, Pink, Gary Numan and KSI, the fashion house has grown immensely in popularity during the years since starting out in 2007, as well as being showcased in a number of movies, the latest being DUNE. DEMOBAZA will be showcasing at LA Fashion Week this spring.

Euro Weekly News: Tell us a little bit about your background, where are you based, and how did you both get into this fashion partnership?

Demo: Well each one of us has been designing clothes from an early age for different occasions, even though we both studied completely different courses: Tono studied Stage Design and I studied Anthropology. But the main thing which remains throughout is our passion for fashion and self expression. Otherwise our main office and production is based in Bulgaria and we personally travel and live in different places around the world.

Tono: We met each other one summer after a party and that day, we immediately started sewing on a very small and basic home sewing machine on the floor for about 24 hours non stop! The result was our first man jeans; a pair of baggy trousers which we also hand-washed to get a vintage look. These trousers immediately got the attention of many friends and people.

After that we started seeing each other more often until we decided to completely start working together in the fields of visual arts, photography, graphic design and fashion. We reached a point where we were no longer able to handle the visual arts aspect because of the increase in  fashion customers and so fashion naturally took over the main focus of our lives. So yeah, it all happened totally naturally and organically for us and our fashion journey!

Europe Weekly News:  DEMOBAZA is fast becoming a well-known fashion brand, loved by many celebs. How did the concept of desert and futuristic fashion aesthetic come about?

Demo: That is actually the combination of our personal style and approach and expression into the garments creation.

Tono: Demo is more ‘demo,’ more raw with his turned inside-out stitchings, raw edges, cuts and reconstructed buildings of the clothes which brings that trashy adventurous nomad look

Demo: and Tono comes with her clean, minimal strong futuristic aesthetics that is very easily recognisable as the future vibe in our style. And that fusion between these two completely different directions shapes the vision of DEMOBAZA.

Europe Weekly News: You’ve often said DEMOBAZA is ‘fashion for the future human.’ What does this future human look like? What does he dream about?

Demo: Yes, DEMOBAZA is a story about our dreams and how we envision the new human being, during and after that transition period between the future and humanity right now. We see humans as ‘lightworkers,’ confident in themselves, grounded in their real purpose, and having reached their solid balance. The new human being is in unity with nature as the main source of wisdom and living in total synchronicity with it. The new human being is a spiritual warrior who fights for the universal truth that love is the greatest power in this existence and it is beyond control and manipulation.

Europe Weekly News: The movie DUNE is reported to have featured over 2000 costumes. What part of this mystical space desert fantasy world did DEMOBAZA play?

Tono: We bring that idea of ‘space desert odyssey’ into real life and make it available for people here and now. Which is actually our main job as artists and as a fashion brand; we bring down and materialize ideas from the morphogenic fields to the physical world.

Europe Weekly News: You are going to present at LA Fashion Week this year. What can we expect from the DEMOBAZA runway?

Demo: We are going to present our new Autumn/Winter ‘22 collection. We can say that it’s a continuation of our storytelling, and it will be very futuristic in black, red and beige colors with sustainable and organic natural materials and fibers.

European Weekly News: Are there any celebrities that inspire you – or that you’d like to dress, and why?

Demo: We are mostly inspired from God-made things in our lives, that are beyond human power to be created, and that is the foundation of all our inspiration. Otherwise one human and celebrity that we have always admired as an artist, who has always had a bright and inspirational message is definitely Michael Jackson.

European Weekly News: What are DEMOBAZA’s plans for the future?

Tono: We are grateful for everything and for each and every one of the beautiful souls who find us, and share our vision and path, so that in the future, we may be extremely honored to expand our community, and spread love and light, and bring many beautiful transformations to our fellow human beings.
