Dark humor jokes: These scenes shouldn’t have made it to TV

Dark humor comedy shows can come up with the most entertaining plots we’ve seen on TV. We enjoy a good self-deprecating joke, a satiric jibe at a social or political issue, and maybe a burn aimed directly at the film industry itself, but sometimes, these shows can push the envelope a little too far. It’s all fun & games until someone develops the taste for human meat.

There are some real gems when it comes to shows that peddle dark humor jokes such as acclaimed comedies like Bojack Horseman, Rick and Morty, and Fleabag. We love the shocking humor because it voices many frustrations we feel but can’t voice. The dark themes explored by these comedies are at times pitch-black and here are the ones we’re shocked made it to TV.

The hot confessional in Fleabag

Fleabag doesn’t hold reverence for many things and religion certainly isn’t on the short list. The dark comedy skillfully plays with the idea of faith through the character of the Priest aka the “hot” Priest.

A scene between the Priest and the lead character, known as Fleabag, we see Fleabag pour her heart out to the Priest in a confessional and ask him what she should do about her problems. His only answer is “kneel”. Then things get hot & heavy when Fleabag & the Priest get ready to bump uglies in a church.

Although we were rooting for Fleabag & the Priest to eventually do the deed we could have never imagined such a salacious scene as this one. Nevertheless the whole thing plays out beautifully with a dour choir singing over the make-out session and the it all coming abruptly to an end when a painting falls over like a commendation of the couple’s blasphemous behavior.

Bojack Horseman and sexual experimentation

The entire episode of Bojack Horseman’s “Love and the Funky Spiderman” was a romp through some intensely dark humor. The episode revolves around autoerotic asphyxiation when Mr. Peanutbutter finds his agent dead due to a choking mishap.

Bojack learns that a former coworker, Corduroy Jackson-Jackson, is also into some light choking but has changed his ways since he heard about Mr. Peanutbutter’s agent. Bojack agrees to take custody of Corduroy’s “choking kit” and decides to use it to see if his girlfriend Wanda will try to talk him out of it.

The darkest part of the episode – besides when Bojack literally puts his head in a noose – is when Bojack returns the “choking kit” only to find Corduroy dead. Just like Bojack mentioned earlier in the episode: you don’t really need a kit in order to choke.

Rick and Morty meet King Jellybean

There are no lines Ricky and Morty won’t cross making the show equally stimulating & horrifying. The worst scene in Rick and Morty has to be the time King Jellybean tries to rape Morty in a restaurant bathroom.

The scene sinks to shocking levels as Morty is forced to beat King Jellybean to a pulp in order to defend himself. The whole thing happens while Rick is on stage singing karaoke – his song choice: “Sweet Home Alabama”.

You’re the Worst at surgery

In the anti-rom-com series You’re the Worst, we get to know Vernon, probably the world’s worst doctor. In the end of the fourth season, Vernon is overworked by taking care of his infant daughter and still having a full work schedule.

In the grip of sleep-deprivation Vernon nods off during surgery and has a dream that he’s on a beach in Mexico. Next thing he knows the ocean turns red, his friend Paul spurts blood from his mouth, and Vernon wakes up to find he’s nicked a patient’s artery. The scene ends with Vernon making a frenzied escape, leaving a trail of blood behind him.

Children’s Hospital is full of heart(s)

Children’s Hospital took dark humor to another level as the entire show was just a series of hilarious, tasteless, idiotic, politically-incorrect jokes. The best example of a scene that was so over-the-top it was shocking was when the hapless paramedic, Chet, drops an entire cooler of human hearts.

The distraught Chet tries to retrieve the hearts but only succeeds in stepping on them, creating a bloody slurry of ice & hearts. The crowning shot is Chet placing a set of defibrillator paddles on a disembodied heart in an attempt to revive it.

An inhuman craving on It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia

It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia is a masterfully dark comedy show that addresses the worst themes in the most casual ways. In season four Charlie & Dee are convinced they’re now cannibals after eating meat that Frank tells them came from a human.

The two can’t sate their craving for the meat even after eating a variety of exotic animals. In the end, they grab a hot plate and a six-pack and head down to the local morgue to chow down. When they have to choose between a Black corpse and a white corpse this leads Charlie & Dee to debate whether they’re racist or if they simply prefer white meat.
