Bingewatch these shows about friends with your best friend now

Are you still watching Friends? It was an epic sitcom giving us tens of laughs per minute, but it’s time to move on. We’re moving beyond the obvious. Not all shows about friendships need to be so obvious about it. We love celebrating the unlikely friendships, the friendships without labels, the friendships that surpass romance in their unconditional love.

If you want a different flavor of friendships in your viewing history, check out the shows below.

New Girl

New Girl follows the story of Jessica Day, a middle school teacher who is chirpy & vivacious even in the face of a devastating breakup. The story begins when she moves in with three guys & continues with a lot of running gags & laughter as she falls in love with one of them.

It’s a classic comedy sitcom that features Nick Miller, one of the best characters to ever exist on television. Not only was Nick Miller the most relatable character, but Jake Johnson brought a certain lovable quality to the character too. Besides, who can get over the Ness kiss once you’ve seen the old Nicky Miller caressing Jess as he lands the best TV kiss on her?

The best part about New Girl, though, has to be the guest appearances & the recurring roles by the likes of Prince, Taylor Swift, Rob Reiner, Jamie Lee Curtis, Adam Brody, Josh Gad, Megan Fox, Brenda Song, Lizzy Kaplan, among others.

The Bold Type

Get over cliched friendships. We’re all about sticking with our buddies, through thick & thin. That’s what the gals at Scarlet Magazine do & we love them for it. Female friendships that feed off on the empowerment of each other are our jam.

Whether it’s ensuring that your gal is getting orgasms, or sticking by her side when she receives life-changing medical news . . . these women have taught us a lot of what we know about friendships. Bonus: inspired by the life of Cosmopolitan editor-in-chief, Joanna Coles, The Bold Type also brought us Melora Hardin in the strongest character she’s ever played.

Grace & Frankie

Talking about breaking the norm, Grace & Frankie is definitely a friend bingewatch material. Chronicling the journey of two women in their seventies becoming friends & roommates because their husbands were secretly in love with one another, Grace & Frankie is a very surprising laugh riot.

Martin Sheen, Sam Waterston, Jane Fonda, and Lily Tomlin play their characters really well, and that trickles down to the younger blood on the show. Their kids present a goofy bunch too. With Brooklyn Decker as Mallory, Ethan Embry as Coyote, June Diane Raphael as Brianna, and Baron Vaughn as Bud, they all bring their complicated characters to life in an understated way.

Parks & Recreation

Some might argue that Parks & Recreation is about an office setting & office colleagues. Leslie Knope would disagree with you. It’s a show about friendship & standing up for the people that you care about as much as it is a commentary on government inefficiency, bureaucracy, and red-tapism.

Not to forget, the show gave us one of the most treasured friendship theories. We’re, of course, talking about Galentine’s Day.

Never Have I Ever

Mindy Kaling’s Never Have I Ever is a very multi-faceted show . . . it touches upon the themes of trauma, grief, teenage insecurities, but it also shows teen friendships in all their glory. Even though Devi seems to be juggling boys & dealing with boy issues — like having to choose between Paxton & Ben — she’s also figuring out life along with her best friends Fabiola & Eleanor.

Now, we are not saying that Devi is the epitome of a great friend — remember that time she went to Paxton’s house instead of being there for Eleanor when she was dealing with family instability?— but she learns & comes around.

Besides, she learns the lesson that friends > boys the hard way.
