‘Set it Up’: All the best date night movies currently streaming

Sometimes it’s nice to get all dressed up and hit a restaurant or a bar for a date night with your honey. But other times all you want to do is crack open a bottle of wine, order a pizza, and cuddle up on the couch over a good movie.

However, this is a lot easier said than done, particularly in an age of endless movie options where most stay-at-home date nights end in the both of you scrolling through Hulu and Netflix for hours while arguing over what to watch. We’ve all been there.

But fret not, as we’re here to help you make a decision by recommending ten movies we think you should watch on your next few date nights. Not all of them will suit your tastes, but we’re confident there’s something in there for everyone. So go freshen up, light some candles, and throw on something a little more comfortable – lingerie, sweatpants, whatever. We’re here to hook you up!

10. 2 Days in Paris (Hulu)

Julie Delpy’s wry romcom stars Adam Goldberg (Saving Private Ryan) and her eccentric real-life parents and it’s brimming with some starkly humorous observations on modern romance. Her sequel to the film 2 Days in New York is also on Hulu and sees Delpy encountering similar problems but in a different city with a different man (Chris Rock). Why not make it a double bill?

9. Coco (Netflix)

Because sometimes there’s nothing better than pretending to be really embarrassed about how much you’re cute crying over a kid’s film while your other half brushes the tears from your face.

8. Much Ado About Nothing (Hulu)

Joss Whedon’s modern day adaptation of William Shakespeare’s comedy is watchable, even for folk who swear they’re not down with the Bard’s ye olde fashioned English. Plus it boasts a stellar cast of regular Whedon collaborators such as Nathan Fillion (Firefly), Alexis Denisof (The Avengers), Amy Acker (The Cabin in the Woods), and Tom Lenk (Transformers).

7. Let the Right One In (Hulu)

If you and your date have some distinctly fiendish tastes, Tomas Alfredson’s weirdly romantic vampire movie could be just what you need. It’s sweet in a super gory these children are killing people sorta way.

6. Carol (Netflix)

One for when you’re both feeling dramatic, Todd Haynes’s adaptation of Patricia Highsmith’s touchstone lesbian love story The Price of Salt is seductive, devastating, and a little bit scary in its exploration of human nature and relationships. Naturally, Cate Blanchett (Blue Jasmine) and Rooney Mara (The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo) both bring their A-game to the film because those ladies never take a day off.

5. It Follows (Netflix)

Just so you can turn to your lover and say, “I’d f*** that curse from you, honey.” So romantic.

4. Moonrise Kingdom (Netflix)

The spirit of true love is alive and well in Wes Anderson’s supremely whimsical film about two kids who run away together. Poignant, heartwarming, and surprisingly funny – mostly thanks to the talents of Bill Murray (Lost in Translation), Edward Norton (Fight Club), and Frances McDormand (Fargo) – the film is an easy, cozy watch and perfect for date night.

3. Set It Up (Netflix)

Hailed by critics and audiences alike as being the sort of classic romcom that many film lovers have missed seeing on screen, Set It Up is adorable, funny, and brimming with charisma courtesy of its cast. Glen Powell (Hidden Figures) and Zoey Deutch (Before I Fall) play two tired-ass office workers who work together to setup their respective bosses (Lucy Liu & Taye Diggs) in a bid to make their working lives a little easier.

2. The Big Sick (Amazon)

Written by real-life married couple Kumail Nanjiani (Life as We Know It) and Emily V. Gordon (The Carmichael Show) and based on the challenging start of their relationship – in which Gordon was hospitalized and put into a medically induced coma – The Big Sick offers a fresh take on romcom tropes with a result as swoonworthy as it is funny.

1. Before Sunrise (Amazon)

Richard Linklater’s beloved romance movie is so cherished by fans that it’s spawned two sequels exploring the same couple at different stages of their lives. This movie introduces Jesse (Ethan Hawke) and Celine (Delpy again) as a pair of strangers who enjoy an overnight fling. Little happens in the movie besides some electric chemistry and philosophical back-and-forths between the two, but that’s what makes it so utterly charming.
