Camping is an artform to many. Here's a breakdown of the best cars to buy if you want to camp in style.

The best cars to help you camp in style

Whether you are lugging a small trailer with your Jeep Wrangler, or hauling a full-size caravan with your Ford F-150, there are numerous ways to reach your camping goals. You can rough it, or glamp like a superstar – all you need is the right equipment. To help you in that regard, here are some of the most capable off-roaders on sale in the USA to get you to that perfect camping site.

Land Rover Range Rover

One of the go-to names in the segment, the Range Rover is a beast of an SUV. The fact that it can fit the entire family and the dog is already enough to earn it a spot on this list, but when you include its 7,716-pound towing capacity and a genuine 4×4 drivetrain for optimum off-roading, there isn’t much it can’t do. And that includes pulling a large trailer, camper, or boat.

Inside, it is luxuriously appointed, which comes as no surprise given the exorbitant $90,900 MSRP price tag for the base model. Leather covers every surface, and the cargo area stows 31.8 cubic feet, or 245.5 with the swankier executive chairs.

On top of that, you get all the latest comfort features, such as tri-zone climate control, heated front seats, a panoramic sunroof, and a ten-inch touchscreen display paired with a 12-speaker Meridian sound system. There are few more glamorous ways to blaze a trail.

Ford Explorer

Another crossover with a flair for the outdoors, the Explorer is one of the top sellers in the segment. If you plan to venture off the beaten path, the available four-wheel drivetrain is a must, and you’ll want the V6 engine for maximum performance. With 400 horsepower and 415 lb-ft of torque under foot, it can tow up to 5,300 lbs, which is more than enough to handle a caravan large enough to support the family.

In a pinch, the rear seats can be folded down flat to create a pretty comfortable surface if you have an air mattress or sleeping bag. But for more conventional purposes, there is 18.2 cubic feet of cargo room behind the back-seat bench. It boasts an excellent safety rating in comparison to segment rivals, and it’s actually relatively frugal in terms of fuel economy, especially with the smaller displacement four-pot.

Jeep Wrangler Unlimited

If it’s just you and a friend, then you don’t need a gargantuan car. But by choosing something a little smaller, you also free yourself up to have a bit more fun in the process. To that end, the all-American classic is definitely the way to go. The Unlimited variant of the Wrangler is powerful for its size, especially with the standard V6 power plant, delivering 285 hp and 260 lb-ft to four wheels. You get a choice of an automatic or manual gearbox, so you can really get your hands dirty.

Apart from being extremely enjoyable to drive, the adventurous Jeep can tow 3,500 lbs and store 12.9 cubic feet behind the rear seats. Folding them down frees up 31.7 cues, which is far more adequate for two people exploring the great outdoors. The ability to completely remove the roof and rear panels helps to remove all obstacles between you and nature. However, the poor mileage figures from the thirsty powertrains may make you feel a little guilty if that is your goal.
