The new Netflix show 'Inventing Anna' is causing a lot of controversy. Is Anna Delvey real? Here's everything you need to know.

Who is Anna Delvey? Is Netflix’s ‘Inventing Anna’ a true story?

While biographical dramas usually get a lot of hype & publicity in the streaming era, Netflix’s new series Inventing Anna is turning out to be controversial. The show, which dropped on Netflix on February 11th, 2022, chronicles the real-life story of con artist Anna Sorokin, aka Anna Delvey. The show stars American actress Julia Garner in the titular role.

Anna Delvey pretended to be a German heiress as part of her scheme, which eventually led to her ending up in jail. The story of Anna Delvey was originally made widely known in a New York Magazine article written by Jessica Pressler before it was developed for Netflix by producer Shonda Rhimes. In the article & the show, we see how Anna Delvey tricked everyone.

In the New York Magazine piece & the series it spawned, we get to know a group of individuals who considered Anna “Delvey” Sorokin to be their friend. In Anna Delvey’s saga, the largest debacle seemed to involve former Vanity Fair staffer Rachel DeLoache Williams. However, DeLoache Williams is apparently taking Netflix to task over the series.

Is Inventing Anna credible?

Rachel DeLoache William recently did an interview with her former employer Vanity Fair. In it, she accused Netflix of portraying her poorly on the show, as well as glorifying Anna Delvey. She told the publication, “I think this whole narrative and celebrating a sociopathic, narcissistic proven criminal is wrong.”

Rachel DeLoache Williams continued, “Having had a front-row seat to [the Anna circus] for far too long, I’ve studied the way a con works more than anybody needs to. You watch the spectacle, but you’re not paying attention to what’s being marketed.” Evidently, Anna “Delvey” Sorokin heard this interview & decided to clap back.

Anna, now thirty-one years old, went on her Instagram story to call out Rachel DeLoache Williams. The infamous scammer admitted that she wanted to speak out after seeing Rachel communicating with the press about the situation. On her story, attached the song “No Friends in the Industry” to drive home the point.

Anna “Delvey” Sorokin substantiated that Rachel hasn’t been telling the whole truth, not speaking of the claim that DeLoache Williams apparently tried to get Anna to co-write a book with her. When Anna alleged that DeLoache Williams used Anna’s tweets against her, Anna wrote, “Find yourself someone who is dedicated to you, the way Rachel is dedicated to my Twitter.”

Anna goes off

As Anna “Delvey” Sorokin’s Instagram story went on, she pointed out Rachel DeLoache Williams’, “flexible moral standards.” Additionally, Anna said, “Netflix forever cemented her (very accurate) total Karen image.” Furthermore, Anna believes that Rachel is specifically courting all of this media attention for capital gains

Anna also mentioned Rachel’s book, which is referenced in Inventing Anna, saying that Rachel could’ve put more effort into making her writing more accurate. She posted, “It’s not my fault HBO dropped Rachel after deciding she was boring and bland and that her book turned out to be garbage, or so I’ve heard.”

During the con, Anna allegedly duped Rachel out of sixty-two thousand dollars, yet Sorokin wasn’t convicted on these charges. This is a fact that Anna found all too easy to remind Rachel of. Anna laid the hurt on when she said, “I’ve already accomplished more from the various jails and prisons than Rachel in her entire sheltered life of privilege.”

As more people watch Inventing Anna on Netflix, this story will no doubt gain more traction, which means this beef could deepen. What’s society’s obsession with con artists? Why do we revere the Jordan Belforts & Frank Abagnales of the world? Perhaps the new media frenzy around Anna Delvey can help explain this phenomenon.

Anna “Delvey” Sorokin, the subject of the hot new Netflix series Inventing Anna, recently called out her rival Rachel DeLoache Williams on Instagram. With both women craving media attention, this feud could go on for a while. What do you think of Inventing Anna? Let us know in the comments!
