A September release date

The big-screen adaptation will get a virtual world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival’s 2021 opening night, and you also will have the chance to stream the film too no matter where you are in the world!

As for the actual theatrical release of the film, you can expect to find Dear Evan Hansen available to view in theaters on September 24th, 2021 to see yourself how much the plot differs from the original musical, because of course, we’re sure they’ll be changing a few things up. Following up the award-winning original Broadway show and cast may be a very tough act to follow, but we’re sure the movie will be a great time regardless.
For those of you who haven’t yet seen the musical though, the plot of Dear Evan Hansen is based on a young high school boy who has to deal with his social anxiety after another teen at his school commits suicide. The movie adaptation stars Ben Platt as Evan Hansen, who has been playing the role in the musical itself from 2015 to 2017, and even earned a Tony Award for Best Actor in a Musical for his impressive performance.
Actress Kaitlyn Dever will be playing Zoe, Evan Hansen’s crush and the sister of the teen who committed suicide, and the two begin to form a close bond through the loss. Other important roles in the film go to equally big names such as Amandla Stenberg, Amy Adams, Julianne Moore, and more. Author and director Stephen Chbosky known best for his work on The Perks of Being a Wallflower is also directing this movie.
TIFF’s Cameron Bailey said: “There was no question that Dear Evan Hansen was the ideal film to launch the Festival this year. This film is ultimately about healing, forgiveness, and reaffirms how connected and essential we all are to one another. We couldn’t think of a more important idea to celebrate this year as we come together once again to share the power and joy of cinema in theaters together”.
The film festival’s co-head Joana Vicente also shared that Dear Evan Hansen will be a movie that “connects to our shared humanity and that reminds us how deeply we need one another”.
