BTS fans are worried about Suga after his shoulder surgery. When will he recover so he can join the group again?

Suga from BTS had surgery: Will he be able to perform again soon?

BTS’s label Big Hit Entertainment shook the ARMY worldwide when they announced K-pop star Min Yoon-gi, or more commonly known as Suga, had a successful shoulder surgery on Nov. 3. They announced Nov. 6 that he’s on track to a speedy recovery. Unfortunately for fans, the 27 year old will have to spend some time apart from the rest of the group – just for a while!

Comments from Suga & Big Hit

Big Hit Entertainment explained to ARMY that Suga had surgery for a posterior labral tear on his left shoulder. His injury started all the way back in 2012, before his debut with a near-fatal car accident. In 2013, the musician was officially diagnosed with a dislocated shoulder and has lived with chronic shoulder pain since.

Big Hit Entertainment elaborated Suga had always lived with shoulder complications in his daily life, such as not being able to fully raise his arms or sudden shocks of pain. While Suga underwent constant rehabilitation & medical treatment, his pain has only increased exponentially over the years, leading to this necessary surgery.

Suga also took the time to make a statement on the Weverse app, assuring his fans in Korean “Fortunately, the surgery went well. My current state is painful, but my mind is quite relieved. I’m away for a while to recover as quickly as possible, but I’ll be back soon. It won’t be that long! Once again sorry and thank you, ARMY!”

The K-pop star declared he’d decided to go through with the surgery after three hospitals recommended the procedure to him. He apologized to his group & ARMY for having to miss some of his upcoming scheduled activities. Big Hit Entertainment proclaimed it felt like the right decision since Suga still has to prepare for his required military service & post-service career.

A long-winded battle

For dedicated BTS stans everywhere, this certainly isn’t the first time ARMY’s heard about Suga’s shoulder woes. This problem has been brought up in Suga’s music and BTS’s documentaries & shows.

In Suga’s 2016 solo track, “The Last”, the musician sings in Korean, “My shoulder which shattered / Thanks to the accident I met / During my part-time job”, retelling how his injury came about.

In a 2018 episode of Burn the Stage, Suga again opened up about his accident in further detail. The star explained he used to be a delivery boy before his debut and had been hit by a car while on the job. Because he wasn’t supposed to be working as a trainee, he initially chose not to tell Big Hit Entertainment. However, once the label found out, they have since tried their hardest to help him recover.

What’s next for the boys?

Big Hit Entertainment & Suga have both made it pretty clear that his journey to recovery will unfortunately prohibit him from being present in upcoming BTS activities. They’ve announced that once doctors determine he’s recovered from surgery, the singer will then have to undergo physical therapy before officially returning to the stage.

“It may be difficult for Suga to meet his long-awaited fans for some time,” Big Hit Entertainment wrote. “We apologize to every fan who has waited patiently to meet Suga again, and we ask for your generous and loving understanding.” Since their announcement, fans showed nothing but kindness & understanding by sending uplifting messages of support & well wishes to the singer for a quick recovery.

While Suga is set for a much-needed break, the rest of the boys in BTS have no such plans. On Nov. 22, BTS is scheduled to perform at the 2020 American Music Awards. Their upcoming album BE is also set to be released on Nov. 20. It’s likely the boys will have to go through all of their promotional events & activities without Suga by their side

It’s also clear the boys’ appreciation for their fans is insurmountable. In a chat with ET in August, BTS took the time to thank them for helping them get through a “rough year”. Singer Jimin addressed ARMY as the group’s inspiration, adding “Things are tough for everybody, and everybody’s really going through a hard time. But I think for ARMY to have this energy and show this drive, it really inspires us.”

As for Suga, he just had one more additional message for his loyal fans on Weverse

“Please understand this time is my chance to prepare to meet you again strong and healthy. Even if I must be away for a short while, please wait for me to come back to you.”

How long do you think Suga’s recovery will take? Are you excited for the group’s upcoming album? Let us know in the comments below.

  • I am so sorry to hear this! You definitely need to take the time you need to heal and get healthy again. Your army of fans all around the world will absolutely be pulling for you and wishing you a speedy recovery. I happen to be a grandmother in Lincoln, Nebraska USA who is in awe at what kind and humble you and the other young men in BTS are. I have become a big fan even at my age of 72 and I watch all your videos and programs. I guess you can say I am probably one of your oldest army fans😁. I think you are all extremely talented and I wish you all a healthy, happy and prosperous life.
