When is Netflix’s ‘Narcos: Mexico’ back for S2? Everything to know

Narcos and Narcos: Mexico have always been some of the most intense television offered. Period. From the use of real-life footage to the harrowing and brutal dramatizations, both of the Narcos series truly showcases the rise of the drug trade in Colombia and Mexico.

Narcos: Mexico proved itself to be a worthy companion to Narcos. The first season holds an 89% certified fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Critic consensus is that Narcos: Mexico is “dangerous, thrilling, and highly addictive” with stellar performances from leads Diego Luna and Michael Peña.

As soon as the first season of Narcos: Mexico ended, fans were clamoring for more. Lucky for them, Netflix has released all the necessary info for Narcos: Mexico’s second season. Here’s everything we know.

The cast of Narcos: Mexico S2

Diego Luna will reprise his role as Miguel Ángel Félix Gallardo (“Félix”), the leader of the Guadalajara cartel. Michael Peña will not be returning to season two as his character DEA agent Kiki Camarena was killed by Gallardo at the end of season one.

Instead, Luna’s Gallardo will be up against DEA agent Walt Breslin (Scoot McNairy). Breslin is described as a “hardened DEA agent whose methods aren’t always by the book. He is leading the team tasked with taking down those responsible for Kiki Camarena’s death.”

In addition to McNairy, who is known for his roles in Halt and Catch Fire and Godless, other new cast members for Narcos: Mexico season two are: Mayra Hermosillo (Falco) as Enedina Arellano Felix, Sosie Bacon (Here and Now) as Mimi Webb Miller, Andrés Londoño (Fear the Walking Dead) as Enrique Clavel, Alex Knight (Legion) as Kenny Moss, Miguel Rodarte (Time Share) as Danilo Garza, Jesse Garcia (From Dusk Till Dawn: The Series) as Sal Orozco, and Matt Biedel (Altered Carbon) as Daryl Petski.

Other new members also include Jesus Ochoa (Overboard) as Juan Nepomuceno Guerra, Flavio Medina (The House Of Flowers) as Juan Garcia Abrego, and Alberto Zeni (The Noble Family) as Amat Palacios, Jero Medina (Belle de Jour) as Ossie Mejia, Jose Julian (The Society) as Javier Arellano Felix, Noé Hernandez (We Are the Flesh) as Rafael Aguilar, and Nat Faxon (Family Guy)  as Ted Kaye.

The plot of Narcos: Mexico S2

Narcos: Mexico will explore the aftermath of the torture and murder of Kiki Camarena along with the splintering of the Guadalajara cartel.

The synopsis for Narcos: Mexico promises what is to come in the 1980s drug trade in Mexico.

“Season 2 of Narcos: Mexico continues chronicling the missteps, ill-conceived agendas, and corruption on both sides of the border that have lead to a dangerous present in the failed war on drugs.  It’s the mid-1980s, as Félix Gallardo’s super cartel splinters under its own dark weight and social and political shifts within Mexico prompt its desperate government’s most brazen corruption.”

“Meanwhile, the American effort to exact revenge for Kiki Camerana’s execution leads them further away from any hope for justice. The cycle of violence rages on.”

If you’re a true crime fan, then this is definitely a story to check out. Attempting to solve the murder of Camarena and takedown Gallardo is one of the wildest stories that you will ever hear. Seriously.

Narcos: Mexico showrunner Eric Newman said of the path for the season two story, “To understand the current level of drug violence in Mexico you have to understand how it all started, and truly grasp America’s integral role in it.  The second season of Narcos: Mexico is a Pandora’s box, the contents of which we still struggle in vain, 30 years later, to try and contain.”

Speaking with The Hollywood Reporter after season one of Narcos: Mexico, Newman said that Narcos and Narcos: Mexico reflect an endless cyclical nature of trying to “win” the war on drugs.

“It’s just the continuing revolving doors of, ‘Here comes the new guy and this time we’re going to get it right.”

Prepare to enter the cycle again when Narcos: Mexico drops season two on Feb. 13, 2020, on Netflix.
