Issa Rae gets married in secret! Celebrate by bingeing her best movies

Everyone’s favorite awkward black girl is finally off the market, folks. People reported today that Issa Rae married her longtime boo Louis Diame over the weekend. Furthermore, the wedding certainly wasn’t modest. Reports say she had a destination wedding in the south of France in Saint-Jean-Cap-Ferrat and tied the knot in a Vera Wang dress. Her beau wore a Dolce & Gabbana suit.

Issa dropped some beautiful photos of her special day on Instagram, and fans couldn’t get enough of the happy bride. Massive names like SZA & Lala took to Rae’s Insta to share their congratulations, and we are right there with them. We’ve gathered our favorite movies & shows with Issa Rae to help ring in her new union.

Insecure

We know it’s not a movie, but we can’t mention Issa Rae without talking about Insecure. Fans know Insecure started as a web series called Awkward Black Girl and soon became a smash hit on HBO.

Insecure is one of the greatest shows on TV right now, and not because it falls in line with the rest of the content out there. Rae provides a devastatingly real portrait of living through your thirties in the late 2010s, through the specific lens of a black woman living in southern California.

The show is so much more than that though, and anyone can see from just a few episodes how meticulously curated the show’s aesthetic is, and how damn funny & poignant the writing is pulled off. The show looks beautiful, is full of beautiful people, and is a slick pleasure in a sea of mediocre slop. Thank you, Issa.

The Lovebirds

Issa Rae’s movie career is just starting, and she’s only been in a handful of movies since Insecure exploded on the scene in 2016. 2020’s The Lovebirds is one of the most unique movies she has appeared in.

The Lovebirds comes from director & funnyman Michael Showalter who helped give us Wet Hot American Summer and the cult comedy group Stella. The Lovebirds tells the story of a couple who gets thrown into a massive adventure right in the middle of a break up.

Kumail Nanjiani co-stars as Issa’s soon to be ex-boyfriend, and the two have great chemistry throughout the incredibly original rom com. However, The Lovebirds was just one movie to come with Issa Rae in 2020.

The Photograph

2020’s The Photograph put Issa Rae in another starring role in a romantic film, but in a completely different light than The Lovebirds. The Photograph allowed Rae to show off her dramatic expertise alongside Lakeith Stanfield.

Rae plays the daughter of a famous late photographer who quickly falls in love with a journalist who is doing a piece on the camera woman’s life. Rae shows off her range in the film, while Stanfield lives up to the acclaim he gained in movies like Sorry to Bother You & Get Out.

Little

In 2019, Issa Rae starred in her first big mainstream movie with director Tina Gordon’s Little. The film follows the lead of movies like Freaky Friday & 13 Going on 30 with a light fantasy-comedy about a demanding boss who turns into the child version of herself.

Issa Rae plays her boss, Jordan’s, assistant April and has to pretend to be her aunt and keep the company afloat until they figure out what the heck happened to Jordan. Regina Hall plays adult Jordan and the two show off their acting & comedic prowess in the light PG-13 comedy the whole family can enjoy. Little gave audiences a taste of what was to come with Issa Rae’s blossoming film career, and we’ve never looked back.
