Get ready for another action-packed 'Indiana Jones' movie installment. Spoiler alert: it's a videogame. Dive into Bethesda's latest project here.

From the movies to your console: Here’s the new Indiana Jones game

Just seeing the name Indiana Jones is enough to stick John Williams’s trumpeted anthem in your head for the rest of the day. Based on adventure shorts from the 1930s, Steven Spielberg’s iconic Indiana Jones franchise delves into the adventures of the suave archaeologist Indiana Jones (Harrison Ford) as he scours the world for powerful relics.

The movies have included the Ark of the Covenant in Raiders of the Lost Ark, the Sankara stones in Temple of Doom, and the holy grail itself in The Last Crusade. Oh, and the alien crystal skulls in Kingdom of the Crystal Skull. We forgot about those for some reason.

However, it looks like the franchise won’t be left hanging with Russian Cate Blanchette and Shia LaBeouf as a greaser. Today, Bethesda announced a new Indiana Jones story was coming to . . . consoles? Let’s delve into Indiana Jones: The Videogame

Not the first Indy movie spinoff

Honestly, this isn’t the first Indiana Jones spinoff that wasn’t a movie. A short-lived TV series called The Young Indiana Jones Chronicles and a few rides & shows at Disney theme parks can attest to that. This isn’t even the first crack at an Indiana Jones video game. Point & click adventures from Lucasfilm already beat Bethesda to the prize eons ago.

For instance, Indiana Jones and the Fate of Atlantis was a CD-ROM game released in 1992. It got a 4.4 out of 5 rating on ClassicReload.com and is still available to play through Steam (the same place you can download Among Us for a small fee).

Also, Lego already beat Bethesda to the punch by releasing its Lego Indiana Jones video games in 2008. Like Indy himself in the opening scene of Raiders, someone always gets there first, and Bethesda is seemingly late to the party . . . or are they?

Why is this installment special?

In their Twitter caption, Bethesda announced they were collaborating with some big names to bring an “original storyline” to fans via their new Indiana Jones video game.

“A new Indiana Jones game with an original story is in development from our studio, @MachineGames, and will be executive produced by Todd Howard, in collaboration with @LucasfilmGames. It’ll be some time before we have more to reveal, but we’re very excited to share today’s news!”

The trailer was also sparse with details, but once that melody came on, and the hat & the bullwhip came into view, fans knew what was what.

The players

However, the scant details we got can be pretty telling. Todd Howard has executive-produced several big names in video games, including The Elder Scrolls & the Fallout series. Based on these games, the new Indiana Jones might be an open-world RPG, where players can create their own Indy-style, whip-cracking, face-punching action heroes.

Also, with Lucasfilms on board, the lore coming out of this game could be canon, expanding details of the Indiana Jones universe without having to make another movie.

Conversely, since Disney owns Lucasfilms and has several Indiana Jones attractions at their parks, Disney could be looking to expand the franchise into another Star Wars or Marvel juggernaut, allowing this videogame to be a springboard for another movie, a new movie franchise, a possible reboot, or a TV show. Since it’s Disney, probably all of the above.

Fan theories

Already, speculation’s rumbling on Twitter about the new Indiana Jones video game. Since it’s still in the very early stages of development, the door’s wide open for everything. Twitter netizens are wondering if Indiana Jones the video game will come to Ps5, be an Xbox exclusive, or whether Harrison Ford will reprise his movie role as Indy to voice the character.

Either way, fans are stoked to get another Indiana Jones installment, even if it’s not a movie.
