Amazon debuts trailer for rom-com ‘The Big Sick’

Amazon Studios has debuted the first trailer for romantic comedy The Big Sick from Michael Showalter (Hello, My Name Is Doris), set for a limited theatrical release this June.

The rom-com is based on the real-life courtship of Kumail Nanjiani (who stars as himself), a Pakistan-born aspiring comedian, and Emily Gordon, a young grad student.

The story is dubbed an “emotional tug-of-war” as Emily contracts a mysterious illness, forcing Kumail to face her feisty parents and, eventually, his true feelings. Can the pair from two entirely different worlds overcome the crisis? Take a look at the trailer here and see what you think.

Amazon bought the film after its premiere at the Sundance Film Festival earlier in the year, having reportedly paid $12 million to secure U.S. distribution rights. Lionsgate will distribute in other territories.

The Big Sick stars Kumail Nanjiani (Silicon Valley, Mike and Dave Need Wedding Dates), Zoe Kazan (Fracture, Ruby Sparks), Holly Hunter (The Piano, O Brother, Where Art Thou?) and Ray Romano (Everybody Loves Raymond, Men of a Certain Age).

The film was produced by Judd Apatow (The 40-Year Old Virgin, This Is 40) and Barry Mendel (Trainwreck, The Royal Tenenbaums).

The Big Sick is scheduled for a limited theatrical release on June 23, 2017 while its wider release has been pegged for July 14, 2017.
