2021 is bringing the movies: See the full list of new releases on Netflix

2021 was supposed to be the fallout of coronavirus for the film industry, a slow rollout of at best mediocre films to get us through the year. Tuesday, Netflix proved us wrong, posting a sneak peek of their 2021 film lineup. Featuring some very famous faces, the video covered some of the films that will be released on the streaming site this year.

Over 110 films are set to be released, which means new movies will arrive on the platform every single week. Like Arby’s seems to have the meats, Netflix seems to have the stars with Melissa McCarthy, Dwayne Johnson, Gal Godot, Lin Manuel Miranda among the celebs behind the lineup.

Here are some of the ones highlighted in the trailer that we here at Film Daily are excited about. There are so many films coming down the pike, so let us know in the comments if we missed one that you wanted us to cover.

Thunder Force

Octavia Spencer & Melissa McCarthy are bringing us the fat superhero movie we need. Out this spring, the comedy focuses on two women who accidentally develop superpowers in a town run by supervillains. Sure to bring the girl power and the laughs, the film also stars Pom Klementieff , Melissa Leo, and is directed by McCarthy’s husband and frequent collaborator, Ben Falcone.

Red Notice

Dwayne Johnson, Gal Gadot, and Ryan Reynolds are teaming up for the action comedy thriller film Red Notice. In the sneak peek video, Johnson & Reynolds beat up bad guys while making jokes. Johnson plays an FBI agent who must work with two rival crooks (Gadot, Reynolds) who must hunt and capture the world’s most wanted criminals. No release date has been given.

Tick, Tick… Boom!

Lin Manuel Miranda’s directorial debut is coming to Netflix sometime this year. The Hamilton creator is directing another musical, this one starring Andrew Garfield & Vanessa Hudgens. Tick, Tick… Boom! explores unrealized dreams and creative genius, something Miranda knows plenty about.

Moxie

Amy Poehler’s second film for Netflix will premiere March 3rd and is a little more serious than 2019’s Wine Country. The teen-centered dramedy follows a shy highschool girl who is fed up with sexist & toxic behavior and starts publishing a zine which causes a school-wide revolution. Based on the book of the same name by Jennifer Mathieu, the film also stars Hadley Robinson, Marcia Hay Harden, Clark Gregg & Ike Barinholtz.

Don’t Look Up

This film not only features a brunette & bearded Leonardo DiCaprio but an all-star cast including Jennifer Lawrence, Cate Blanchett, Jonah Hill, Timothee Chalamet, Ariana Grande, Tyler Perry, & Chris Evans. Oh, and Meryl Streep plays the President.

The film will follow “two low-level astronomers,  who must go on a giant media tour to warn mankind of an approaching comet that will destroy planet Earth” according to the official synopsis. This political satire is helmed by Adam McKay, director of The Big Short & Vice. No official release date has been given, but odds are it will be out for next year’s Oscar season.

The Harder They Fall

After the lawless year that was 2020, 2021 needs a western. Regina King, Lakeith Stanfield, Idris Elba, Zazie Beetz, and Jonathan Majors lead an all-black cast in The Harder They Fall. It will follow Nat Lover (Majors) who has to resemble his old gang to kill the man who murdered his family. No release date has been given but our guess is late next year in time for Oscar season.

Franchises ending

The sneak peek also highlighted the end of two popular franchises for the site. Lara Jean’s journey officially comes to an end this February in To All the boys: Always and Forever, Lara Jean. Lana Condor I Noah Centineo are back to star. Joey King, Jacob Elordi, Joel Courtney finally say goodbye to the kissing booth in The Kissing Booth 3, out mid-year.
