‘Visitor’ directed by Pavel Bartovský: What you need to know

Initially studying animation and VFX, Pavel Bartovský has found himself drawn to the power of the director’s chair. After studying at the Jiří’s Trnka Private Primary School in Pilsen, Bartovský enrolled in Film Academy of Miroslav Ondříček in Písek to focus on directing.

Since then, Bartovský has been making his way in the short film world, directing shorts across all genres. As of late, his 2020 film Visitor goes for a nuanced horror vision through ghostly visitation.

Visited by the dead

As our lead Bara (played brilliantly by Martina Babisova) is mourning the loss of her boyfriend in her rinky-dink apartment, she’s visited by the ghost of him. But his visit is far from pleasant, as he’s coming due to a dark, harboring secret between the two of them.

Written by Veronika Andrejskova, a frequent collaborator of Bartovský, this was his first attempt at directing a fictional short. His direction nails the terrifying vibe needed to demonstrate the broken relationship between Bara and her ghostly boyfriend.

A career full of shorts and effects

It seems like Bartovský is perfect for short film making, as he’s spent his career so far in short-form filmmaking. From commercials, to his short documentary The Life Through View-finder of Petr Brukner, Bartovský has been focused on more short form media.

But that’s far from his only talent. Taking his skills he learned at the Jiří’s Trnka Private Primary School, Pavel Bartovský has made him an extremely talented animator and VFX artist, with plenty of credits in both career paths.

On top of all this, Bartovský is also a graphic designer, taking his VFX skills and applying it to still images. It’s clear he’s the kind of person who can manage to wear multiple hats at once, a skill very much needed if you want to be a successful director.

More to come

Nothing is stopping the Pavel Bartovský success train yet though, as the director has started pre-production on his next film Lov. Aiming for a fall 2020 release date, Lov will see Bartovský collaborating with Andrejskova again, directing another one of her scripts.

Following a thefting couple, Eva wants to move on and start a new crimeless life, while her boyfriend Martin is desperate for cash so they can have a good time. But their latest break-in is far from what it seems as revelations come to light.

It’s clear this Czech director has talent, and Pavel Bartovský won’t be leaving the spotlight anytime soon.
