Film Festival of the Day: APOX Film Festival

The winter film festival season is about to begin, and we have independent films on the brain. It seems like every year the quality of the films and the talent of their creators exceeds the year prior, and 2020 will not disappoint. We’re highlighting some of the smaller festivals for our lovers of independent cinema, and the APOX Film Festival is the perfect place to start.

The APOX International Documentary Film Festival

Featuring over 70 documentaries from all over the world, the APOX Film Festival will be held on the Croatia Island of Lošinj from October 2nd to 5th. Organized by the Relive Association of Veli Lošinj, films will be shown at three different locations on the island: the cinema Veli Lošinj, the Fritzy Palace Museum, and the Museum of Apoxyomenos.

The documentaries featured in the APOX festival will focus on culture and cultural diversity, and already boasts a wide range of films. The festival’s main competition presents in three categories: International Documentary: Long Movies; International Documentary: Short Movies, and Debut movies.

The APOX Film Festival will also offer workshops for high school and elementary school students prior to the festival. Workshop attendees will have the opportunity to create their own films to be presented at the festival.

What films can we expect at APOX Film Festival?

While APOX will be accepting submissions until May 30th, 2020, this festival already boasts an impressive lineup.  We can’t wait to see Daniel Gabriel’s Mosul, the gritty story of local militias and uneasy allies who banded together to liberate Iraq’s second-largest city from ISIS in 2017. Additionally, Juliana Chagas Gouveia’s Say My Name about two transgender women who are struggling for the right to change their names and gender in all official documents also looks captivating.

To keep track of all of the new acceptances into the festival, APOX’s Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram accounts all release updates on new films and other festival news.

How to get involved

Any new film festival faces challenges and APOX Film Festival Director Marco Hesky is happily welcoming volunteers, backers, and sponsors to ensure a smooth inaugural event.

Volunteers at the festival will have the unique opportunity to experience a behind-the-scenes look at how a film festival comes together. In addition to the inside scoop on how such a grand event comes together, event volunteers also get free admission to film screenings.

Backers of the APOX film festival will have the chance to contribute to the event’s success. The inaugural year of any event of this size is always the most impactful, and APOX is welcoming cinema fans from all over the world to take part in its launch.

Those interested in becoming a sponsor of APOX can reach out to Marco Hesky’s team directly through the festival’s website.

What stands out about the APOX Film Festival?

In addition to the breathtaking location and already impressive line up of films, the APOX Film festival promises a fully engaging experience for all attendees. The red carpet event promises to mix attendees’ cinematic experiences with the cultural and historical heritage of the island of Lošinj.

APOX will also offer a unique training and networking platform for industry up and comers. APOX will be hosting educational and practical programs with numerous masterclasses, pitching sessions, workshops, panel discussions and round tables held by some of most respectful names in the film industry.

APOX will conclude with a final concert and award ceremony on the stage in Veli Lošinj.
