Cannabis for Insomnia, Helpful or Not?

Studies About CBD and Insomnia

Before we determine whether cannabis is helpful or not in insomnia, it is best to know why you are experiencing it. Some of the reasons are enumerated below:

  • Consuming caffeine, particularly when taken late in the day
  • Grogginess

  • Studies about cannabis started way back in 1970, and it continues up to the present. Here are some of the studies that can prove cannabis is effective in insomnia.
  • The study involved 72 participants, with 47 of them with anxiety and 25 experiencing poor sleep. Each participant was given 25mg of CBD in capsule form. In the first month, 66.7% reported they experience some improvement in their sleep, and 79.2% of the subjects reported a reduction in anxiety level.
  • CBD can also help reduce pain, which also affects sleep. A good amount of evidence found in another study from 2018 supports the claim that cannabinoid is effective in relieving pain. Thus, once the pain is reduced, it improves sleep significantly.


Further studies are needed to determine if cannabis can improve sleep. The studies mentioned above somewhat support the claim that cannabidiol content can help deal with insomnia, but it requires more research to prove its capability.

Cannabis is available in various forms like vape concentrates, pills or capsules, tinctures, oils, or gummies.
