Sundance hit ‘The Nile Hilton Incident’ lands at Strand Releasing

Strand Releasing has acquired North American distribution rights to Tarik Saleh’s The Nile Hilton Incident, having swooped in on the film during its launch at the Seattle International Film Festival.

The deal was struck between the Los Angeles-based distributor and The Match Factory. Jon Gerrans represented Strand during the negotiations, with Michael Weber inking it on behalf of The Match Factory.

The Nile Hilton Incident is set weeks before the Egyptian revolution of 2011, as a police officer working within Cairo’s corrupt system investigates the murder of a famous club singer. But what initially appears to be little more than a crime of passion leads him to the ruling elite of Egypt. To obtain justice, he decides to break all the rules, colliding not only with the system, but himself.

The flick, written and directed by Saleh (Metropia, Gitmo), had its world premiere at this year’s Sundance Film Festival, going on to win the Grand Jury Prize for a Dramatic Film in the World Cinema category.

“I am honored that Strand will bring our film to an American audience. After a fantastic start at Sundance I felt how strongly our story resonated with what is going on right now in the United States”, commented Salah.

Strand has been on a spending spree recently, having also acquired Bavo Defurne’s Souvenir starring Oscar-nominated actress Isabelle Huppert (Elle) and animated neo-noir feature Have a Nice Day from Jian Liu.

“We’re proud to take this film out to the public in light of recent political events which should resonate with the American public and create a real sense of discussion”, added Strand’s Gerrans.

The film will be released in France next month by Memento Films, with Cherry Pickers lined up to distribute in Benelux this August. The Match Factory is currently selling The Nile Hilton Incident to other international markets, with several deals said to be in the pipeline.

The Nile Hilton Incident was produced by Kristina Åberg (She Monkeys) and is a Swedish, Danish and German co-production.

Fares Fares (Zero Dark Thirty) stars in the lead, with Mari Malek (The Good Lie), Yasser Ali Maher (The Yacoubian Building), Slimane Dazi (Only Lovers Left Alive), Hania Amar (Mohamed Dubois), and Ahmed Selim (Warda) rounding out the cast.

Strand Releasing are thought to be aiming for an autumn release for The Nile Hilton Incident, but a specific date has yet to be announced. See the trailer here.
