Warner Bros. Pictures has debuted the first trailer for Blade Runner 2049, sequel to Ridley Scott’s iconic 1982 sci-fi noir film, and scheduled its theatrical release for October 2017.

Denis Villeneuve (Arrival, Prisoners, Sicario) directs the follow-up to Scott’s film, winner of BAFTA awards for Best Cinematography, Best Costume Design and Best Production Design/Art Direction. Blade Runner also snagged nominations for an Academy Award and a Golden Globe in 1983.

In Blade Runner 2049, set thirty years after Scott’s Blade Runner, LAPD Officer K unearths a long-buried secret that has the potential to plunge what’s left of society into total chaos. To divert the course of history, K embarks on a quest to locate Rick Deckard, missing for more than three decades.

The film is written by Hampton Fancher, who wrote the screenplay for the original in collaboration with David Webb Peoples (Twelve Monkeys), and Michael Green, one of the showrunners on Starz’s American Gods (reviewed here).

Scott is serving as executive producer on the film, which is based on Philip K. Dick’s science-fiction novel Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?.

Blade Runner 2049 stars Ryan Gosling (Drive, La La Land, The Big Short) in the lead alongside Harrison Ford (Raiders of the Lost Ark, Star Wars: The Force Awakens) reprising his legendary role, Robin Wright (Netflix’s House of Cards), Dave Bautista (Guardians of the Galaxy, Spectre), Jared Leto (Requiem for a Dream, Dallas Buyers Club), Lennie James (Snatch, AMC’s The Walking Dead), and Ana de Armas (War Dogs, Hands of Stone).

Blade Runner 2049 is scheduled to be released in theaters on October 6, 2017; view the trailer here.
